The bird that hooked me on birding. I had just started birding in 2000, and that winter I'd heard of a relatively consistent and cooperative Gyrfalcon hanging out on the Fort Pierre National Grasslands in South Dakota. I soon made my first trip to the area...the first of what would turn into dozens of trips over the years. I found the Gyrfalcon, a bird I'd thought of as kind of mythical in my early birding days, and...was hooked.
