Dark-eyed Junco

Photo of the Week (November 12th, 2017)

(archive photos of the week here)

Junco season has arrived! Woo-hoo!  Junco season in South Dakota is the time of year where it sometimes seems as if the only species left alive in the snowy white winter hell are Dark-eyed Juncos. I shouldn't IS nice having them around, when so many other birds leave for the winter. It is cool to see the variety of plumages, with the prettiest ones we get being the "Oregon" race, as shown below.  Very handsome birds.
