Great-tailed Grackle Photos

Photography by Terry Sohl

My Favorite: Great-tailed Grackles are a relatively new arrival in South Dakota. When I first started birding in 2000, it was a species that was expanding their range northward (ahem...climate change), and was just starting to regularly be found in southern parts of the state.  There's a place called "Atkin's Slough" down by Tea, South Dakota (just outside of Sioux Falls), where I've always had good luck finding these guys.  Here's a male showing off that trademark "great" tail.
