Black-crowned Night-heron Photos

My Favorite: Not only my favorite Black-crowned Night-heron photos, but one of my favorite photos of all time. How often do you get a chance to get a photo of multiple species in a photo in such close proximity? Particularly a mammal and a bird. This was a relatively cold April day, and a group of about 7 or 8 Black-crowned Night-herons were camped out in a wetland, not really moving much. The cold wasn't stopping the muskrats from being active however. This one was swimming along when it decided to pull itself ashore and start grooming himself...right next to the Black-crowned Night-heron. The heron didn't seem to mind. I love not only the juxtaposition, but the pose, as to me it looks like the muskrat is there to serve his master or something. The photo was taken on April 16th, 2020 in western Minnehaha County, South Dakota.
