Snowy Owl Photos

There may not be many advantages to living in South Dakota in winter, but the winter raptors and Snowy Owls are one of those advantages. Very irregular in appearance, they could show up anywhere in the state. Photos below show locations as diverse as within the Sioux Falls city limits, to the wide open spaces of the Fort Pierre National Grasslands. Always a treat to run across, there was one magical 2011 week or two where over 20 (!!!) Snowy Owls were hanging around one small area around Lake Andes National Wildlife Refuge for some reason. I've never seen a concentration like that before.
