Common Loon Photo

This photo was taken on July 18th, 2004 below Oahe dam, as he swam with another pair of Common Loons.  The question is...what the heck is that hanging off of his back end?  Note the high-res closeup on the bottom.   Is it a fish or something tangled in fishing line and then tangled on the loon?  Is it the remains of a torn-up leg and foot?  Let me know what you think!!  Taken with Canon 300D, 400 5.6L lens.
