This photo of a Ruby-throated Hummingbird was taken on July 20th, 2008 at Newton Hills State Park. There's an elm tree near Sergeant Creek affectionately known as the "sapsucker tree", because of its heavy annual usage by Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers. This year is no exception, and in fact, it was three fledgling Y.B. Sapsuckers I was trying to shoot. It was hard not to notice all the other birds coming to partake of the sap and insects attracted to it though, included this guy. He would come and visit the sap wells, and then fly right back across the road and perch in a dead tree for 5 - 10 minutes before repeating the journey. There was another one, a female, who I also saw visiting. Taken with Canon 20D, 400 5.6L lens.
