This is quite simply my favorite photo that I've ever taken. I was cruising the Fort Pierre National Grasslands near sunset, was about to quit for the day, when I decided to take one more side-road. After 1 mile, there were 4 short-eared owls sitting in the grass alongside the road. Three of them were shy and flew off immediately. This guy, however, was extremely curious. I stopped the car and grabbed several shots as he circled me, staring at me the whole time. It was quite a thrill to see one so close. Taken with Canon 300D, 400 5.6L lens.
This photo was a Canon contest winner, another reason I'm quite fond of it!! That's how I won a Canon 20D DSLR!!
