This photo of a male Downy Woodpecker was taken on May 11th, 2011 in Brandon, South Dakota. PI like these little guys in my yard, but...MAN can they do some long-term damage to your trees. I have this little 3-stem ornamental maple close to my feeders (shown here), and whenever the Downy Woodpeckers come in to feed, they first land on this tree, take a few pecks, and then hop to the feeders. All the cumulative little pecks have ended up killing this young maple. Photo taken with Canon 50D, 400 5.6L.
