South Dakota Birding"Hotspot"

Lake Thompson Area

Photo Location#1 -- Oldham Grade

This is the view along Oldham Grade, a road cutting directly through the southern edge of Lake Thompson.  This was taken in 2003, when the water level was significantly higher than it is now.  At one point, water from Lake Thompson flooded the road, and as late as 2000, water still would lap over the road on occasion.  Today, the water level is at least 8 feet lower than what is shown in this photo, and the highway has been restored.

As noted in the text on the main page for the Lake Thompson area, this area is wonderful for shorebirds, wading birds, waterfowl, and many other birds.
