When a Scandal…Isn’t…

I’m finding it increasingly hard to read the “news” lately.  What qualifies as “news” has already changed significantly in the last few decades, as “news” websites and “journalists” seem to increasingly focus on the trivial, on the provocative, and on the scandalous, regardless of “news” worthiness.

In the world of D.C. politics, “scandal” has similarly become focused on the provocative, political, and trivial.  With the extreme polarization of Repubs and Dems, it seems our elected Representatives and Senators are more interested in finding “gotcha” moments to score political points than they are in actually governing.  Politicians are more interested in seeking the short-term limelight of the attention garnered through uncovering of “scandals” than they are in the long-term benefits of legislating.

According to the “news” sources, we have three major “scandals” occurring right now; Benghazi, the IRS, and the Justice Department/AP.  Especially given the involvement of the AP in the Justice Department investigation, a riled-up media has played up the three “scandals”, doing their best to make them as provocative as possible to an ignorant and easily fooled public.

Dig a little deeper, and its damned hard to get too worked up about the major “scandals”.  PERHAPS if Republicans in the House would focus on legislating and solving the issues, rather than just trying to score political points, I could take them seriously.  However, Republicans have turned the “scandals” into personal witch-hunts, desperately trying to directly link the “scandals” to the current Obama presidency, and a possible NEXT Democratic presidency of Hillary Clinton.  Benghazi was a tragedy, and people died.  In the world of D.C. politics, the focus isn’t on correcting the situation and trying to improve security.  GOD no…in fact, Republicans continue to be against any increases in funding for diplomatic security.  Instead, Benghazi, like the other scandals, is primarily about the next election instead of being focused on preventing another Benghazi.

Immigration reform?  Entitlement reform? Increasing unrest in the Middle East? Deficit reduction? Health care?  With the current focus on “scandal”, Congress seems like they couldn’t care less about the more pressing issues facing the country.

“Gotcha” journalism now has a VERY willing partner in “gotcha” D.C. politics.

“Fair and Balanced” Fox blames “biased media”

What a surprise. Fox News has been imploding for the last 7 hours, since it was officially called for Obama.  First, you had Karl Rove completely embarrassing himself on live TV last night.  What a GREAT night to have Fox News on (I will NEVER say that again in my life!!).  It was when the networks called Ohio, that they officially called it for Obama, Fox included.  At that stage, it really was a formality.  Obama was also leading and likely to win Colorado, Virginia, and other states that would have put him over 270, so calling Ohio was, shockingly…just a formality.

A desperate Karl Rove, however, looking for ANY evidence to back his prediction of a Romney win, freaked out on live TV on Fox when raw numbers from Ohio were roughly tied, with 80% of the vote called.  He looked at the number and started excitedly saying that Ohio was called too soon, that Ohio could still end up in Romney’s column.  The people analyzing things behind the scene had obviously looked at the counties that had already been counted, and noted that with “blue” counties overwhelmingly making up most of the uncounted votes, that Romney was toast.  Little details like the evidence or facts didn’t matter to Rove, however, who continued to insist that Ohio was “in play”.  It even went so far where a Fox host went over to the “analysis” desk for Fox to ask if they really got the call right.

Within 10 minutes of the vote being called for Obama, Fox News already had up a “story” called “Five Ways the Mainstream Media Tipped the Scales for Obama”.  Wow…that’s some FAST writing by Fox News.  Kudos to them for the speedy fingers.  Obviously, the story was written in advance, and, unsurprisingly, given the wacko folks who actually read Fox News, that story has been the most read story on Fox ever since the first half hour after the Obama call.

I have to laugh at one of Fox’s reasons that the mainstream media won the election for Obama.  Reason #2 in the story…the mainstream media “Pounded Romney with Fact Checking”.  GASP!!!  The media, actually checking the FACTS from the campaign??!?!?  HOW DARE THEY!!!  AN OUTRAGE!!!!  Fox being Fox, they accused the MSM of lying, when fact checking, with the MEDIA lying when they said Romney lied.

My head hurts.  It’s hard to follow Fox’s version of logic…

I’m watching Fox News right now, at 5:40 AM Wednesday, and their story they’re focusing on right now?  Voter intimidation…by Democrats!  Nothing on voter suppression efforts from Republican-led state legislatures and governors.  No, Fox has been hammering a story since yesterday afternoon, and are STILL talking about it this morning.  The “Story’ of voter intimidation?  A lone black man standing outside a polling place.  GASP!!!   That is NOT allowed, just chimes the dingbat Fox host!!!  The black man is just standing there, and occasionally walking back and forth.  But MAN is he menacing.  After all…he IS black!  Is that ALLOWED!?!!  For a black man to be anywhere HEAR a polling site!?!?!

GREAT entertainment seeing the Fox meltdown this morning…

EDIT:  Good lord.  The idiocy never ends.  Now, Fox is reporting about voter fraud, about unregistered voters supposedly voting in numbers in Ohio. They have no evidence, mind you.  But it certainly feeds all the crushed Fox viewers who are spittin’ mad and looking for conspiracies, looking for people to blame.

You are NOT entitled to your opinion – Shut the hell up

From Patrick Stokes, here’s a nice piece on why you are sometimes NOT “entitled to your opinion”.   The point he’s making is that you are only “entitled” to an opinion that you can make a coherent argument for.  He uses an example of anti-vaccination paranoia to make his point, where the manic anti-vaccine crowd doesn’t have a scientific leg to stand on.  Science is science, fact is fact.  If your opinion is based on conjecture, intuition, “faith”, or other factor not supported by the facts?  Then you are NOT entitled to your opinion, when trying to argue against science and against fact.

Thus, a “Shut the Hell Up” topic for this post.  As we enter the home stretch of the presidential election, it’s rather laughable to read some of the opinions of those on the right.  Do you believe any of the following?  If so, then please do everyone else a favor, and save yourself some embarrassment.  Just Shut…the…hell…up.

- Obama Muslim? Obama a non-citizen? – Do I need to even mention these? Are you a disgusting, racist, pig-of-a-human being who believes Obama is not a citizen?  Do you believe that historical newspaper reports and a birth certificate are simply part of some massive conspiracy? Are you a disgusting, racist, pig-of-a-human being who refers to Obama as “Barack Husein Obama” and believes he’s secretly a Muslim?  If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, PLEASE…SHUT…THE…HELL…UP.

- Evolution Denial – Science is based on theory.  Theories are tested, with evidence either supporting or negating hypotheses.  With evolution, the evidence is extremely clear, both in the fossil record, and in real-world, observable processes.  Do you believe in creationism?  I really don’t care if you believe some omnipotent, all-powerful entity created the earth and the universe, IF you can reconcile that in your own mind with the science.  Do you believe evolution is false?  Do you believe evolution is a “lie straight from hell”, like Paul Broun, quite possibly the most ignorant congressman in the U.S.?  Do you belive the earth is just a few thousand years old?  If so, then SHUT…THE…HELL…UP.  Save yourself the embarrassment that’s sure to come whenever you open your mouth.

- Climate Change Denial – Possibly as soon as 5 years from now, the Arctic will be ice-free in the summer for the first time in at least 13 million years.  The U.S. is about to set a record for its warmest year ever.  Atmospheric carbon dioxide levels continue to rise, and the scientific evidence continues to overwhelmingly point to not only a warming climate, but a warming climate caused by anthropogenic activity.  Do you believe climate change isn’t real?  Do you believe scientists and liberals are involved in some unprecedented, massive conspiracy to somehow consolidate government power by pointing to climate change?  Do you believe that climate change is occurring, but humans have nothing to do with it?  If so…SHUT…THE…HELL…UP.

- Polls are politically biased – Just one week ago, before the debates, conservative talking heads and blogs were expressing outrage over the liberal bias of polls that showed Obama with a healthy and growing lead over Romney.  Obama with a 6-point lead in Ohio?  A 5-point lead in Florida?  BALONEY, said those on the right!  It’s a liberal conspiracy to discourage Republicans and depress voter turnout from the right!!  One short week later, and an Obama debate flop has the poll trends strongly reversing towards Romney. Hey Rush?  Do you still think the polls are biased toward Obama?  How about you other buffoons and blowhards who scoff at polls when they show Democrats ahead?  GMAFB.  The very success and long-term continuance of polling entities depends on them being RIGHT.  If they’re wrong, they are ignored in future elections and the polling group goes out of business.  Are you one of those idiots who thinks political polls are purposely biased towards Democrats?  Do you think there’s some conspiracy in the polls to depress Republican turnout?  If so, then SHUT…THE…HELL…UP.

- 1997 Michigan was better than 1997 Nebraska - A bit off topic, but…do you believe the 1997 Michigan Wolverines would beat the 1997 Nebraska Cornhuskers?  Do you believe the Wolverines were “robbed” when a perfect, 13-0 Nebraska team finished first in the coaches poll, while the Wolverines finished first in the AP poll?  Puh-lease.  The Nebraska ground game easily wears down the Wolverine defense, and the Blackshirts dominate the Wolverines.  Final score if they’d have played?  Nebraska 31, Michigan 13.  Do you believe the Wolverines were the better team?  Laughable!  SHUT…THE…HELL…UP.

- Unemployment numbers manipulated by Obama and Liberals - Unemployment numbers out last week were good by any measure, with unemployment falling to 7.8%.  Good news, right?  Well, to nutjob conservatives, ANYTHING positive that could EVER be attributed to Obama has to be a lie!  A liberal conspiracy!  Clearly Obama has somehow influenced the unemployment statistics!  Are you one of those conservative wackos who believes last week’s unemployment numbers were altered by Obama?  Please, just SHUT…THE…HELL…UP.

- Romney Budget Miracle - Do you believe that you can simultaneously 1) Cut taxes 2) Maintain or raise military spending, and 3) balance the budget?  Romney/Ryan seem to believe in such a formula for long-term fiscal sanity.  Do you believe it’s possible?  GMAFB….SHUT…THE…HELL…UP.

- Voter ID Regulations Are About Voter FraudReport after report show that voter fraud in the U.S. is insignificant.  However, a number of states have pushed strict voter ID regulations, with Republican-led state legislatures and governors leading the charge to increase scrutiny of in-person voters.  If in-person voter fraud isn’t an issue, if very few instances have been documented…why the push by Republican state legislatures to push for very strict voter ID laws?  Under oath, I don’t think you’d even get most Republicans to say the laws are about curbing voter fraud.  It’s about suppressing votes by minorities and other groups who historically lean very heavily towards Democrats.  It’s a form of discrimination, it’s a form of racism, it’s about voter suppression.  If you believe it’s actually about voter fraud?  You’re an idiot…SHUT…THE…HELL…UP.

Don’t blame Romney, Repubs. It’s your party that sucks.

Ohio Polls

Poll trends in Ohio over the last month (Average of polls, from RealClearPolitics.com). Despite this being average of all polls, Repubs continue to insist on poll bias. Or media bias. Or, many are just assuming they're going to lose at this stage, and are blaming Romney. It's not the polls, or the media, or even Romney himself. It's what the Republican Party stands for.

I love the panic right now among Republicans. Ever since the conventions, and ever since Romney lost his ability to censor himself, the polls have moved very strongly in Obama’s favor.  InTrade had Obama with a 54% chance of reelection before the conventions.  Now, it’s over 75%.

Republicans are in a state of shock.  They just assumed they would win this election, solely based on the state of the economy.  Their entire strategy was based on the proposition that voters would blame Obama for the current slow economy, and would vote for the Republican candidate by default, whoever that candidate turned out to be.  Now that Obama is widening his lead in Ohio, Florida, and other important swing states, Repubs are placing the blame on one of 2 factors 1) Romney himself, or 2) “biased” polls.

There is no getting over the fact that Romney has run a miserable campaign.  More on that in a second.  Beyond Romney though, there have been numerous stories and opinion pieces out this week from the right claiming some kind of conspiracy or bias in the poll numbers.  Despite the fact that every poll on the planet has Obama in front nationally, and in front in Ohio, Florida, and every other swing state, Repub pundits are claiming it’s all a part of an effort to depress Republican voter enthusiasm, that the polls are using incorrect assumptions, and that these same Repub pundits “know better” than the pollsters.  Republicans just seem to be in shock that the electorate isn’t rushing to support them.  It HAS to be the polls, right? There’s no way people actually LIKE Obama and Democrats!!!

I am absolutely loving it.  I’m loving seeing the Republican party completely self-destruct.  The election is still almost 6 weeks away, but Republicans are falling all over themselves right now, trying to play the blame game.  IT’S ROMNEY!  If ONLY Romney were more like Paul Ryan!  Or, IT’S THE POLLS!  The media and the polls are out to get Repubs!

Well, guess what, Republicans?  It’s not Romney.  It’s definitely not the polls. It’s not some liberal media conspiracy.  It’s your entire, deluded, $hitty excuse for a political party that’s at fault.

Let’s start with Romney himself.  Clearly, of the miserable batch of Republican “stars” that were in the primaries, Romney was the most “electable”.  He was the most qualified.  He was the right choice, from a Republican perspective.  But in winning the nomination, Romney has been forced to act like he’s something he’s not…a hardcore, right-wing conservative of the kind that Republican leadership INSISTS on.  Romney has had to abandon his former moderate stances and has shifted so far to the right he can’t even remember where he came from.  Granted, given how extreme the Republican party has become, he likely wouldn’t have won the nomination if he hadn’t moved to the right.  Some assumed he’d move back towards the center after winning the nomination, in preparation for the election against Obama.

However, Republican leadership simply hasn’t allowed any wiggle room for Romney.  Be it foreign policy or the tax policy back home, Romney has been squeezed into a position where he’s forced to continually reiterate the most extreme conservative positions.  Obama has taken out Bin Laden and kept us safe at home, but Republicans continue to act as if they alone are the standard-bearers for security and the military.  Hence the sabre-rattling tone from Romney on every foreign policy issue, as if America acting “tough” is the answer to the delicate and extremely complicated issues in the Middle East and elsewhere.  Romney continues the bravado when talking foreign policy, however, simply because he HAS to.  His base insists that he act “tougher” than Obama.

Things are no different on the domestic front.  Romney and every other candidate running for the nomination were all pushed into a position where even a $1 tax increase for every $10 cut in spending was too much.  Romney has been pushed into a position where he has to continually talk about cutting taxes, while at the same time, somehow magically maintaining or increasing our military budget, and balancing our overall budget.  It’s an impossibility…but logic or fact have given way to ideology for the Republican party.  Romney is a problem-solver…he’s not one to carry the Republican ideological flag.

It’s a mismatch, it’s been doomed from the start, and there’s no one to blame other than Republican leadership and the party as a whole.  Republicans, you’ve been done in by your own hatred, your own intolerance, your sole focus on being the “anti-Obama”, rather than standing for anything meaningful.  You’ve been done in by your extremism, by your unwillingness to compromise, no matter the consequences.  You’ve been done in by a vision for America that bends over backwards to accommodate those with money and power, while abandoning those who need our help.

It’s not Romney.  It’s not the media. It’s not biased polls.  Don’t act shocked that you’re losing, that people aren’t stampeding to support Romney or Republicans.  You simply don’t represent what America wants, or needs.

MSNBC Analysis: Defense Failed Sandusky

Just perusing the headlines before getting ready for bed, and I see a headline on MSNBC that states “Analysis: Faltering Defense Hurt Jerry Sandusky”. I really hate how trials and law are something of a “game” in this country, in terms of how the media reports on things. I really hate analysis like this that scrutinizes every intricate detail of our screwed up legal system.  Frankly, I don’t give a damn about the intricacies of U.S. law, about the brilliance or ineptitude of lawyers, or endless debate about how a legal case plays out.

And I SURE as hell don’t care about a “faltering defense hurting” Jerry Sandusky. WHO…CARES.  First of all, who cares if ANYTHING “hurt” Jerry Sandusky.  I’m against the death penalty…but, with that said…I can certainly sympathize with that one father in Texas who beat and killed a man who was sexually attacking his young daughter.  Can’t imagine what I myself would do in that situation, if I came across someone hurting my son like that.  I certainly can sympathize with all the families hurt by Sandusky’s absolutely disgusting, evil behavior.

So I’m sorry, MSNBC, I don’t care to read about the legal intricacies of the case, I don’t care to read about how Sandusky’s defense team  let him down.   The man is scum, not even capable of defending his own behavior by testifying on his own behalf.    The only thing that “hurt” Jerry Sandusky is his own warped and twisted inner demons.

Rot in hell, Sandusky. I for one am GLAD your defense “failed” you.  WHO CARES about the damn legal case.  The story isn’t about how well or how badly the lawyers performed.  The story is about one sick SOB about to be brought to justice, and about the families who will never heal after what Sandusky did to them.

Tough Being in Government Right Now

Secret Service Agent Chaney and Palin

THIS is the "Top Story" on CNN? The Secret Service guy in the background, posting this on Facebook and saying at the time, he was "checking out" Sarah Palin?

Don’t get me wrong with the tone of this post.  The Secret Service / prostitution scandal is disgusting.  The story about the GSA and what they spent on their Las Vegas meeting was disgusting.  As representatives of the government both groups should have obviously known better.  There’s no doubt people have the right to be upset about those stories.

However, in the big scheme of things…are these stories that REALLY deserve to be at the top of the headlines for the past 2 weeks?  A bunch of guys visiting prostitutes?  Yes, not good, but not exactly something that’s a shocking story.  The GSA thing?  Disgusting, but in terms of money, it’s less than $1 million.  The point of this blog is that the media is SO focused on “gotcha” journalism, that the REALLY important stories are crowded out by what are, really, quite minor stories.

I go to CNN today, and at the time, the story at the VERY top was “Former Secret Service Agent Checked Out Palin”.  Really, CNN?  You couldn’t find anything better to have as your feature story this morning?  A former Secret Service agent posting on Facebook that he “checked out” Sarah Palin?   THIS is one of the top stories affecting Americans right now?

Oh, I get it, CNN, you’re milking this Secret Service thing for EVERY last drop.  But GMAB.  A SS guy posting on Facebook that he was “checking out” Sarah Palin?  OK, yes, the guy is an idiot for actually posting that on Facebook, but I’m not even sure it’s an “offense” worthy of any discipline to the man himself, much less a story that deserves the top headline on one of the leading “news” (hah!!) sites in the U.S.

One thing Republicans have done a completely MASTERFUL job of since the financial collapse…turning ALL of the attention away from corruption and greed on Wall Street, and focusing ALL of America’s hatred towards our very own government.  I’m in government.  I see the truly WONDERFUL work we do, many things that people just can’t live without, other things that truly enrich people’s lives.   But yet the entire political discussion in the U.S. right now seems to be focused on the evils of our government and just how fast we can whittle it away down to nothing.  Wall Street corruption?  Nobody blinks an eye anymore when a corrupt CEO gets paid $30 million a year.  But yet a SS guy “checks out” someone and it becomes the major news story of the day.

When I see “major” news stories like a SS guy checking out Palin, what crosses through my mind are folks like Paul Ryan, John Boehner, and Mitch McConnell, sitting back and LAUGHING at how they’ve hoodwinked America into believing government is the root of all evil.  All while they propose budgets that reduce services for those that need them, and funnel more money to their very rich benefactors.  Well played, Republicans…you’re getting EXACTLY what you want.  And, as always…the American public is too damned ignorant to pay attention.

“The Healing Has Begun” at Penn State – GMAFB

Nebraska - Penn State Football Game

Nebraska and Penn State players huddle and pray before the game today. A nice gesture, and Nebraska coach Bo Pelini had a great post-game press-conference on the game, and its importance in the big scheme of things. But did the fact that a football game was played really start any "healing" process?

My Nebraska Cornhuskers had a very awkward situation this week, having to travel to (formerly) Happy Valley to play Penn State.  Nebraska ended up winning 17-14.  I’m glad they won, but I admit I didn’t even watch the game today, as I just didn’t want to think about the Penn State situation today.  I didn’t want to spend my afternoon dealing with an incredibly awkward situation and such a strange football game.

So instead, my 8-year old son and I went fossil hunting today, and had a great time.  It wasn’t until I got home that I saw that Nebraska had won, but it was the headlines on multiple web sites that really bugged me.  “The Healing Has Begun” seemed to be the common theme, both on sports websites, and on regular news sites.  All I have to say about that is G…M…A…F…B.

All week long, there’s been more focus on Joe Paterno and Penn State football fans than there has been on Jerry Sandusky himself, or the Penn State officials who assisted in the cover up.  And today, it seems the press is again reverting back to that line of thinking.  Yes, Penn State played Nebraska in football today.  I saw the players all gathered at mid-field for a group prayer before the game.  Very nice.  I suppose that for the players themselves, maybe “the healing has begun”.

But c’mon, mainstream media.  Just because Penn State played its first football game since the news broke, how the hell does that qualify as the start of the “healing”?!?!!   How does Penn State playing a football game today have ANYTHING to do with the crime?   Again, I’m showing my cynical side, but…I’d be completely shocked if the names of all Penn State folks involved in the scandal have surfaced yet.  I have little doubt there are more people at Penn State, and more people within the football program, that had knowledge of the allegations and suspected behavior of Jerry Sandusky.  I REALLY doubt that a large number of Penn State football staff on the sidelines today will be there next year, once the story continues to develop.

But yet, the media has declared that today was a start to the “healing”?  Does the fact that Penn State played a football game today have ANYTHING to do with the “healing” of the victims and their family?  With a scandal such as this, having played out for SO many years and with so many people involved, I’m afraid we’ll continue to see the story in the news for some time to come.  I’m afraid the wounds the situation has caused will continually be re-opened as the story evolves.  I’m afraid the anger will only continue to crescendo as all the sordid details come out, and as we learn of more names involved.

While the “healing” may have begun for the seemingly all-important football component of the story, healing is a long ways off for the families involved in this tradgedy.

Rick Perry IS Sarah Palin

Sarah Palin and Rick Perry

Sarah Palin and Rick Perry, two peas in a pod. Both dumber than a stick, and both blaming the media when their own inadequacies are exposed.

I had a revelation today when reading the headlines.   Rick Perry, 2011 IS Sarah Palin, 2008.  Remember back to 2008, when Palin made a complete fool of herself in an interview with Katie Couric?   An obviously embarrassed Palin immediately started to blame Couric, and then the media in general, when the embarrassments continued to pile up for her.

Now flash back to the present.  Today, in an interview on Fox News, Rick Perry said the one thing he regretted most is “ever doing one of the debates“.   Perry’s reasoning (aka, excuse) was that “all they’re interested in is stirring it up between the candidates instead of really talking about the issues that are important to the American people.”  Translating from Perry-speak into basic English, Perry’s statement reads as “I made a complete fool of myself during the debates, and wish I never had to embarrass myself again”.

It’s the classic Republican response when the heat gets turned up.  For a Perry or a Palin, it’s NEVER about your own pitiful inadequacies.   No, of course it’s some media conspiracy or bias that is causing you to look like a complete idiot.  For a guy who was hoping to turn his fading campaign around this week with his announcement of a flat-tax plan, Perry is certainly sticking his foot in his mouth a lot this week.
