Arctic Ice-free in 4 years?

Hairy Old White Men

This is it!! The LAST American presidential election where fucked up, greedy, "Hairy Old White Men" like those running the Republican Party can ever deny the reality of climate change.

I haven’t blogged about climate change in many months.  I guess it’s because I don’t even think about it any more.  No, not from the James Inhoffe viewpoint, sticking my ignorant head in the ground and ignoring the issue.  No, I don’t think about it because it’s a fact of life, just like the sun rising every morning.  It’s happening, it’s relentlessly marching on, and at this stage, there’s absolutely nothing we can do to stop it.  We’ve dug our grave…

But even as a scientist who knows the science behind climate change, I find the pace of change truly shocking.  I find stories like this one truly shocking.   It’s been a given that Arctic  sea ice has been shrinking, but the pace of decline has outpaced even the most dire of predictions.  Last week, it was officially announced that the Arctic sea ice was at its lowest level ever…and there were still a few weeks left in the melt season.  What’s really shocking are the numbers, compared to just 30 years ago.

By area, Arctic sea ice covers 45% less area today than it did over the 1979 to 2000 average.  HALF of Arctic sea ice gone, in the blink of a geologic eye.  It’s even more shocking when you look at volume of sea ice, as it’s not just area that’s declined precipitously, it’s the volume of the remaining ice.  The remaining ice continues to deteriorate in quality and thickness, and now is down an astounding 72% from the 1979 to 2000 average.  THREE-QUARTERS of all Arctic ice…gone in one generation.

As the story above states, the pace of decline is outpacing all projections, and it’s now quite possible that in just 4 years, the Arctic will be completely ice-free in the summer.

The “good” news, I guess, if there is any?  This could very well be the VERY last presidential election where one completely fucked up American political party denies the reality of climate change.  Four summers from now, when ships are freely plowing across the Arctic Ocean without any pesky ice to stop them, it will be awfully damned hard for the greedy, ignorant, short-sighted SOB’s on the right to deny the reality of climate change. Of course, by then it will also be too late to do anything about it…since right NOW, it’s too late to do anything about it.

Perusin’ and Musin’

Perusing and MusingSome random thoughts from perusin’ the web…

Obama’s accomplishments – I saw an article today comparing Obama to Jimmy Carter, with the point being that both are supposedly incredibly ineffective presidents.  Pardon my language, but bullshit.  And pardon the language here, but check out whatthefuckhasobamadonesofar.com.   As a card-carryin’, tree-huggin’, liberal wacko, I recognize some disappointments in the Obama administration, but I also recognize 1) the cards he’s been dealt, including an impossible to work with Congress, and 2) the remarkable accomplishments he HAS achieved that seem to get little press.  Even Bin Laden’s capture is hardly ever mentioned (and is also why Republicans seem scared to touch Obama much on foreign policy any more, except in a really shallow and meaningless way).

Slovakia’s Parliament Rejects Euro Bailout – GOD DAMN IT OBAMA!!  Yet another indication of the bumbling Obama administration’s poor handling of the economy!!  Well, OK, Obama can’t control the Slovakian parliament, but that’s my point.  Obama, and government in general, get WAY too much credit or blame for economic issues.  Look at U.S. markets over the past several months.  They react almost daily to the latest news regarding a Greek bailout, austerity measures in Spain or Italy, etc.   In a globally integrated economy, there’s only so much one government can do to try and improve economic conditions.  And that’s in a BEST case scenario, where the government isn’t so hopelessly partisan and unproductive as ours.

Rick Perry Refuses to Condemn Anti-Morman Rant – Rick Perry said he will not repudiate a Texas pastor who last week called Mormonism “a cult”, something which voters should take into account when considering Mitt Romney.   Perry says he won’t repudiate it because it’s just “a distraction” that Romney is trying to capitalize on.  My thought…Perry will make up every excuse he can not to repudiate it, because he knows that the “Christian Right” (aka, bible-thumpin’, hate-mongerin’ wackos) agree with the Texas pastor, and he can score political points with them if Romney’s faith stays in the headlines.

Kim Kardashian Wedding draws 10.5 million on E! – Over 10 million viewers watched part one of the Kim Kardashian wedding on E!.  I honestly don’t know a single thing that Kim Kardashian has ever done in her life.  But yet, I wonder how many people in America know more about her than they do about the Republicans debating tonight?  As I noted in a post a few days ago, 46% of Americans can’t even name ONE of the Republican candidates.  I wonder if a higher percentage of Americans know about this “star’s” wedding, even though there’s not a single real accomplisment of any importance that I think you could attribute to Kardashian.

Ice Loss in Greenland Continues to Accelerate – The Greenland ice sheet is rapidly losing mass, and the rate of decline has been accelerating.  If you are a climate change idiot skeptic, PLEASE take the time to check out SkepticalScience.com and educate yourself.  Be it there or elsewhere, I could literally post a story like this just about every day.  But of course, climate change is all one very well-executed conspiracy by we scientists, right?

Senate Republicans Block Jobs Bill – Thanks to the mechanics of the Senate and the wonderful filibuster, 46 Republicans voted against continuing debate on Obama’s jobs bill, effectively tabling it.  I LOVE this last line of the article…”Republicans opposed the measure over its spending to stimulate the economy and its tax surcharge on millionaires“.  That pretty much sums up the Republican stance right now…keep the economy as weak as possible before next year’s election, and protect their sugar-daddies deep financial pockets.

Perusin' and Musin'

Perusin' and Musin'Some random thoughts from perusing the web.  What a great morning! Sitting in my sun room, watching birds come to my feeders, and perusin’ the headlines.

Walrus Herds Gather on Alaska’s Northwest ShoreThis is a phenomenon not seen until 2007, when suddenly, very large herds of Walrus started gathering on shore in late summer, rather than hang out on their usual haunts on the edges of ices floes.  The problem…the Arctic ice extent continues to shrink, and is so far out from shore in late summer now, that the ice edge is over water far too deep for Walruses to effectively feed.   Now it’s been 4 of the last 5 years they’ve been doing this.  More empirical evidence of the dramatic changes climate change is causing to the Earth’s ecosystems.  More empirical evidence that climate change denialist wackos will simply ignore.

Do we need another dumb Texan as president? –I find the respondents’ comments more interesting than the blog post.  Some folks are arguing that there’s a difference in “book learnin’” vs. what’s needed to govern.  Bull$hit, I say.  When did being intelligent turn into a negative for those on the right?  You hear a lot of complaints about “elitism” leveled towards liberals.   Hmmm…who would you rather want leading your nation?  Someone intelligent who actually understands the issues?  Or some bozo like Perry who almost flunked basic economics and history?

Governors say Flood Control must be Priority on Missouri – The poor Army Corps of Engineers.  Our joke of a local paper (Argus Leader) had an “expose” series of articles on supposed Army Corps mismanagement of the Missouri River this year.  Of COURSE record flooding is all the Army Corps fault!  DAMN GOVERNMENT!!  They’re the cause of ALL our issues!  The flooding I’m sure had NOTHING to do with record snowfalls and subsequent melt, or record rains in Montana this spring.  I’m surprised those on the right aren’t directly blaming Obama for the flooding.

Burger King Mascot Dethroned – I’m not a marketing guru or anything, but…didn’t you think the Burger King “King” was creepy and weird?  As were most Burger King commercials?  But then again, I seem so out of touch with popular culture that maybe some element of the population liked him.

Christie: Climate Change is Real — Instead of pandering to the wacko element of the GOP, why can’t a candidate open ACCEPT science?  Chris Christie, John Huntsman, and Mitt Romney have all said they believe that climate change is happening, and that humans are at least partially responsible.  And the GOP response?  Rush Limbaugh simply said “Goodbye Nomination” when Romney said he believed climate change was happening.  It’s fine by me if the wacko element continues to drive the GOP nomination process, because it means that someone completely unelectable will be nominated and that Obama will get a 2nd term.  If a Christie, Huntsman, and yes, Romney, would simply step up and say “STOP THE NONSENSE”, and focus on the facts regarding evolution, climate change, etc., the moderate wing of the GOP would embrace them, and they would actually have a chance in the election against Obama.

Kardashian, Humphries to Wed in Evening Ceremony – THANK YOU, news organizations, for keeping us up to date on the hot-button issue of the Kardashian wedding!!  THANK YOU for keeping this towards the top of the headlines!!  In the shallow, pop-culture dominated lifestyles that seemingly 98.7% of Americans lead, I find it quite sad that most people probably know a lot more about Kim Kardashian’s exploits than they do about the real reasons behind the economic crises, facts about climate change, what’s happening in Iraq and Afghanistan, or even who their government representatives are.
