WWJD = GMAFB

What Would Jesus DO?

What would Jesus do? I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be pro-war, wouldn't be a gun nut, and wouldn't be a hate-mongering bigot.

I was waiting at a stoplight yesterday and was behind a massive pickup with a number of bumper stickers.  Prominently displayed at the top of the tailgate was a bold bumper sticker that said “WWJD?”, with it spelled out below (What would Jesus do?).   OK…whatever, the bumper sticker itself was fine.  But I literally laughed out loud after seeing that bumper sticker, and then seeing the OTHER bumper stickers that were surrounding this one.

First was a bumper sticker that said “God, Guts, and Guns”, and there was also a NRA sticker on the back window.  This being South Dakota, there was of course also the obligatory gunrack hanging on the inside of the back window.  Now, I’m not the most religious person on the planet (to put it mildly), but, my impression would be that Jesus wouldn’t be an NRA member, and wouldn’t be packin’.

We also had the bumper sticker that said “Dont’ Blame Me, I Didn’t Vote for the Muslim”.  There was also one that said (something close to) “White, Straight, Conservative Male – Political Correctness is Overrated”.  Two bumper stickers that would lead me to believe the driver was homophobic, racist, and intolerant of Islam.  Just like Jesus, right?   Ayeesh.

My personal favorite…the bumper sticker of a giant mushroom cloud, with the words “Sometimes War IS the Answer”.  You know, I’ve seen bumper stickers along the lines of “Make Love Not War”, or “War is Not Pro-Life”, but, I can’t say as I remember seeing a bumper sticker that just gives a good ol’ endorsement to “war” in general.  I’m pretty sure Jesus wasn’t “pro-war”.

Finally…on the back window was one of those (very classy) stickers that had a little boy with an evil grin, peeing on a “Chevy” sign.   I’m pretty sure Jesus wouldn’t condone peeing on things he doesn’t like.

I wish I had a camera with me so I could have snapped a shot of his tailgate, because there were some other gems as well that I don’t remember.  That tailgate to me did a wonderful job in summing up the attitudes of many very hypocritical, very screwed up conservatives.  Republicans have excelled for a number of years at having their message resonate with “Christian” conservatives.

WWJD…a nice message in theory.  But it’s obviously nothing more than a bumper-sticker logo for far too many religious conservatives, as they quite literally don’t practice what they preach.

The Santorum/Graham “Brand” of Christianity

Rick Santorum and "faith"

Rick Santorum and Rev. Franklin Graham to me are a great example of what being a Christian should NOT be about. I find it repulsive that the Santorum "brand" of Christianity, a brand that FAR too many Americans follow, uses religion as a tool to bludgeon those who look, act, or think differently, rather than using it as a tool to promote tolerance.

I really don’t care what people believe personally.  If you are Hindu, Muslim, Christian…whatever.  Believe what you want.  No matter your religion, the underlying morals are generally the same.  Be nice to each other.  Don’t kill each other.   Don’t steal from each other.   All the major religions have the same general moral guidance.   In theory.  In reality?   The words are all there.  The major tenets of the major religions all SOUND good.  But how do “religious” people actually act?

Why is it that those who CLAIM to be the most “religious”, are also very often the most hateful, bigoted people on the planet?  My biggest pet peeve in life…the bigotry, hypocrisy, and pure HATRED that stem from religion.   As we learn more about Rick Santorum, the more I’m convinced he’s NOT just a harmless simpleton with a view of the world right out of the 1600s.  No, as we learn more, the more he opens his mouth, the more I’m starting to realize he’s downright evil.  And, no surprise to me, alot of it stems from what HE purports to be a strength…his religious faith.

There has been a tremendous amount of controversy over comments Santorum has made over the last week, regarding Obama’s brand of Christianity.  You see, for bigots and hypocrites like Rick Santorum, it’s NOT ENOUGH for Obama to be a Church-going, long-time Christian.   No sirree.  He doesn’t have the right BRAND of Christianity.  In fact, from hearing Santorum speak over the last week, you’d think Obama actually was a cultish devil-worshiper, rather than a Christian.

Ok, you say, perhaps it’s just “dirty politics” (is there another kind?).  After all, Santorum is running to become president, so of course, in America, that means you have to talk about your opponent like they’re the worst thing since Hitler (Something, in fact, that Santorum HAS alluded to with regard to Obama!!).    What about a fine, “upstanding”, representative of Christianity?  Billy Graham’s son, “Rev.” (hah) Franklin Graham, talked today about Obama’s faith…or lack thereof.  Graham’s comments?

Graham said he CANNOT categorically say Obama isn’t a Muslim.  He also says that Islam has gotten a “Free Pass” from Obama.  Interesting comment…I didn’t realize that the American President was supposed to go to war with the Islamic faith.  He also referred to Obama as a “Son of Islam”, given that his father’s side of the family came from an Islamic background.

Who could blame Graham for his ignorant comments? After all, Obama is  (gasp!!) BLACK!!  And he once had an Islamic relative!!  Of COURSE he can’t be a Christian!  At least not the same BRAND of Christianity as (old white men) Graham and Santorum.   All of this reminds me of my junior high days, and the “clique-ness” of adolescents.  Religion for FAR too many has become not a place to ponder your humanity or man’s role in some “higher” order.

No, religion has become the equivalent of that “popular” kid in junior high who wouldn’t let you sit at the same lunch table.   You SAY you’re a Christian?  HAH!!  You’re not MY brand of Christian!!  ESPECIALLY since you LOOK differently from me!  You MUST be a Muslim!!!!  No lunch for you!! Not at MY lunch table!! Go eat with the “heathens” at the end of the cafeteria!!!

As I said, I don’t care what personal religious beliefs people have. But MY GOD, don’t people see the hypocrisy of their actions, compared to what their religion supposedly teaches them?   The BIGGEST BIGOTS in the U.S. seem to be those with a “strong moral foundation”, as provided by Christianity.   One of the most repulsive types of people to me are those that cloak themselves in their religion, all the while spouting pure HATE and vitriol for gays, people of other faiths, people of other races, etc.

“Reverend” Graham?  Given your actions, I consider you as much a “Reverend” as I do my pet cocker spaniel (not that my cocker spaniel is an evil bigot, but you get the idea).   I could simply state the obvious.  What if Obama were white?  Would Santorum, would “Reverend” Graham, be attacking Obama on religious grounds at all!?!??  I truly doubt it.

There is SO much hate and vitriol from the right, directed towards Obama.   It doesn’t help that hate and vitriol might as well become the new GOP slogan.  But it goes far beyond political discourse or dysfunction.   Church sponsored bigotry and hypocrisy is just a microcosm of America overall.  The Church CLAIMS to value “the golden rule”, kind treatment of others, etc….but in reality, has become a mechanism to spread hate of ALL other religions.

America?  We CLAIM to be the big “melting pot”, a country that cherishes diversity and views it as a strength.  In reality?  Our actions towards each other speak volumes on the horrors within the human heart and mind.

So, for all you good ol’ “REAL” (hah) Christians out there in America…next time you’re sitting in church for the Sunday sermon, how about actually listening to it?  How about actually taking it to heart?  How about using your religion as a tool for TOLERANCE, rather than as a sledgehammer for breaking down people who don’t act, look, or think like you?

Republican “Values” Revealed by Gingrich Win

Obama

You can disagree with Obama's politics. But he's a honorable, Christian man with NO personal skeletons in his closet. Supposedly, those are things that Republicans value...good ol' "Conservative values". The GOP race is showing what Republicans REALLY value, however.

As the title of my blog hints at…I’m about as cynical as they come.  There’s a good reason for that.  I’m a scientist…I look at the empirical evidence, and base my opinions on the actual evidence.  There is already AMPLE evidence as to how incredibly selfish, short-sighted, ignorant, and greedy people are.   It’s not as if my cynical views really NEED daily affirmation, but…the Republican presidential race certainly provides me plenty of fodder for reinforcing my views.

Really, South Carolina?  Really, GOP?  Newt Gingrich is who you consider to be the best and the brightest the GOP has to offer?   The man is exposed as a complete scumbag…and the GOP response is to give the man standing ovations for it?  For him to actually SKYROCKET in the polls, and win the state primary?  My god, Republicans are even stupider than I thought.  It also exposes Republicans as being complete frauds…and reinforces my cynacism.

The hypocrisy of Republicans is just incredible.   How incredibly hateful has the GOP been to Bill Clinton over the years?  How much of Rush Limbaugh’s radio show time over the years was devoted to bashing Clinton’s behavior while in office?  How much of NEWT GINGRICH’s time back then was spent bashing Clinton’s behavior?  This, despite the fact that Gingrich was having an affair with a Congressional aide at the very same time he was trying to impeach Clinton…for his affair.

Republican hypocrisy is NOT just an issue with politicians like Gingrich, or talking-heads like Limbaugh.   No, the hypocrisy extends ALL the way through the Republican voting base.  How many Republicans call themselves “social conservatives”, and supposedly base their vote on those views?  The complete OUTRAGE over Clinton’s affairs?  Justified!  Even to me!  Clinton WAS a womanizer who NEEDED to be called on his behavior.  And GOP politicians, talking heads, and the electorate ALL very vociferously and publicly called him out on his behavior.  But then, when Bush was elected, the GOP electorate forgave Bush’s past indiscretions, and embraced him as a ‘Christian’, a man with “Republican values”.

Then along came Barack Obama.  A life-long Christian.  A man who has had ZERO personal skeletons in his closet.  An honest man who has had ZERO personal scandals while holding the office of president.  You can disagree with his politics, but Obama is a fine human being, one that we can be sure won’t embarrass us while in office.  But, for Republicans, that’s not enough.  They had to try to MAKE UP personal issues in his past…saying he’s really a Muslim (as if that would matter?!??!)…saying he’s not an American citizen.  The biggest “sin” Obama has ever made was being born black, but obviously that’s not something (most) Republicans can come right out and SAY is their biggest personal issue with him.

What this GOP race is showing is that what cynical folks like myself have known all along.  MORALITY, HONOR, conservative “VALUES“??   THEY…DO…NOT…MEAN…ANYTHING to most of the GOP.  It all SOUNDS good.  Republicans talk a good talk.  But as I’ve said before, and what is PAINFULLY obvious from this GOP race…it’s all just talk.

Republicans don’t care about any of that.  When it comes right down to it, they just care about their own personal self-interest, about their own greedy desires, their own personal biases and demons…just like seemingly 90% of the human race.  Voting for Newt Gingrich?  A man with SO many personal AND political skeletons in his closet that from a personal perspective, he’s better identified as a what Republicans would call a “godless liberal” than a “conservative Christian”?    Nobody should really be surprised.  As I started this post with, it’s just more fodder to stoke my cynicism.
