End of an Era – Republican Election Based on Winning Whites

Tom Scocca at Slate.com has a scathing indictment of Republican campaign strategy over the last 40 years…a strategy based simply on winning the white vote. A strategy based on exploiting racism and fear. A strategy based on hate.  As the Scocca piece notes, Romney’s campaign strategy is based solely on one demographic…trying to win at least 60% of the white vote, with an emphasis on winning the vote of white men.  That part of his strategy certainly seems to be working, given that a recent poll shows Romney winning white men by a whopping 65% to 32%.

The story also notes that this may be the last election where Republicans can hope to use this strategy, at least at a national scale.  The changing demographics of America simply won’t allow for such a strategy to have a chance in hell as America becomes ever more diverse.  One more “old school” election, where the Hairy Old White Men in charge of the Republican Party try to eke out a win using old school tactics.

Great, brutally honest, and sadly, brutally true piece by Scocca.  Give it a read if you get a chance.  Makes me ashamed to be one of those Hairy (getting) Old White Men.

Against Gay Marriage? Not a “Policy Choice” – You’re a Bigot

In the aftermath of a man attacking a Christian conservative group’s headquarters, the blame game began.  I find it truly amazing how people can blame the “other” political party for just about anything nowadays. The leader of the band Megadeth went on a rant at a recent concert, and personally blamed OBAMA for all the mass shootings lately, implying that the shootings were all backed by Obama so he could get more support for gun control legislation.  Heck, at my work, a colleague flying back from a meeting sat by someone who complained about how cramped the seating was in coach, and personally blamed Obama, saying “it will be better once Obama is out of office”.

It seems with ANY significant event, there’s a race by both political parties to try to define the event in terms of “blame”…with each party typically somehow twisting storylines to somehow direct blame towards the other party.  Sure enough, with the idiot started blasting away at this Christian group’s headquarters, the blame game began.

Family Research Council president Tony Perkins blamed organizations “like the Southern Law Policy Center”, for labeling groups like his as “hate groups”.  Perkins went on to say it was “reckless” to labels groups like that “hate groups” due to what HE said were “policy” viewpoints.

My point of the post isn’t the “blame game” itself…that’s the topic of another forthcoming blog post.  My problem with what Perkins and groups like his say is that they’re just promoting an alternative, viable “policy”.

If I may be so bold…if you are against gay marriage…YOU…ARE…A…BIGOT.  Plain and simple.  Black-and-white.  I really get sick of groups like Perkins’ group talking about “preserving the sanctity of marriage”, blah, blah, blah.   What complete and utter bullshit, PARTICULARLY when most of these groups are ALSO against civil unions or anything ELSE that recognizes that gay couples should have the same LEGAL rights as all other human beings, whether you call it  a “marriage” or not.

A gay, married coupled in NO WAY affects the marriage of ANY  OTHER HUMAN BEING, other than the couple themselves.  PLEASE, Mr. Perkins, tell me how the marriage of a gay couple in ANY WAY affects the marriage between me and my wife.   What’s that?  You can’t do it?

Then pardon me if I DO label groups like yours as “hate groups”.  There is NO other point to your “policy” viewpoint, other than to hatefully discriminate against another group of human beings.

The idiot who started blasting away at this group’s headquarters is a nutjob, no doubt.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m obviously in no way condoning such action.  But in the blame game that has followed, I can’t allow Mr. Perkins and others like him to get a free pass for the complete bullshit that they’re spouting.

The “Redneck Vote” – Exploiting Americans’ Own Bigotry and Hatred

Obama

A black president, showing mercy towards illegal immigrants. It's the worst nightmare for the "Redneck Vote". So, they'll vote Republican, and effectively vote to kill their own futures.

Republican politicians are outraged.  Oh, they’re not REALLY “outraged”, they’re “outraged” as only Republicans can be, a completely fake, manufactured form of “outrage.”  It’s the same kind of fake “outrage” they express every time Obama or any other Democrat opens their mouth.  So what has Republican politicians “outraged” this time?  Obama’s statements this week that the administration’s policy will be not to pursue deportation of young illegal immigrants.

The policy is basically an executive order with elements of the “Dream Act”.  Illegal immigrants who entered the U.S. as children, who haven’t run into any legal trouble, won’t actively be pursued and deported. Republicans of course are screaming “AMNESTY!!!” at the top of their lungs, as if it’s somehow EVIL to treat young people who have spent most of their lives in the U.S. as, well…people…as AMERICANS, with the same hopes, dreams, and ambitions as the rest of us.

Republicans don’t screw around.  They don’t worry about facts, figures, or trying to get Americans up to speed on policy issues.  No, they seemingly have one, and only one, strategy…to pander to the basic primeval emotions and instincts of people.  Bigotry…Fear…Hatred…THESE are the foundations of the Republican party platform.  The economy?  The environment?  Foreign policy?  Irrelevant!!  They hear Obama showing COMPASSION to a group of AMERICANS (for all intents and purposes, other than legal standing)…and immediately they see an opening.  They see a way to, once again, ignore all the issues that REALLY should matter to Americans, and instead capitalize on and exploit the bigotry and hatred that is present in far too many Americans.

I’m amazed at how clouded peoples’ vision is, with regard to what truly benefits them, and how they behave.  Republicans have mastered the art of convincing Americans to vote AGAINST their own best interests.  GREED, corruption, and inadequate oversight of Wall Street and corporate America have played a huge role in where our economy is today…yet just a few short years after Republicans and their Wall Street friends drove the economy off a cliff, they’ve managed to convince the ignorant electorate that Wall Street and Corporate America aren’t the problem, that it’s government that’s the problem.   For those people who AREN’T stupid enough to buy that…they fall back on their strategy of tapping into the internal bigotry and hatred of people.

So…the poor working class stiffs who CONTINUE to lose their opportunity to achieve the American dream, who CONTINUE to see their “share of the pie” go to an ever-increasingly rich 1%…ALSO are the same complete idiots who continue to vote Republican.  They hear Republican politicians bitch and moan about illegal immigrants, and they are manipulated into blaming illegal immigrants for the economy, for their own crappy lives, for…well…everything.  Republicans continue to tap into the inner BIGOTRY of Americans, and that same ignorant group of Americans continually give their vote away to Republicans, in return for…in return for what?

What the HELL do Republicans do to help the working class American?  Oh yes, that’s right…tax cuts for the rich and policies tilted completely towards benefiting those who need the least amount of help.  But yet they’ve completely locked down the “redneck vote”…those who vote based on their own bigotry and hatred, despite the implications for how their vote really affects their own lives.

I guess if it didn’t impact the rest of us, it would actually be some kind of sweet justice, where those who live their lives based on HATRED end up being punished in the end for their own ignorance and biases.  But it’s hard to laugh at how the redneck-voter ends up screwing themselves, when in the end, they end up screwing all of us.

Bigotry and hatred as a political weapon

Rick Santorum

Faith, Family, and Freedom? As long as it's a white Christian heterosexual family.

Rick Santorum today urged Mitt Romney to use the gay marriage “controversy” as a “potent weapon” against Obama in the upcoming election.  Santorum says Obama is the one who is out of touch with what America “values”.

If it’s Rick Santorum who is IN touch with what America values…we’re screwed.  If ranting and raving against homosexuality and gay rights is what represents American values…we’re screwed.  If advocating for women to be treated as they were 200 years ago represents American values…we’re screwed.  You can’t build a democracy on a foundation of hate, but that’s what SO many on the Republican right seem to be trying to do.

It’s not just the gay marriage issue.  It’s bigotry and hatred in general that might as well be the core platform of the Republican party.   Just look at some of the “core” Republican issues over the last decade, as the party swings ever further to the (very radical) right.

  • Gay rights - Summed up very nicely in a nutshell by Santorum’s comments today.  Gays and lesbians aren’t people in the eyes of the radical right.  Constitution be damned, they’re not to be treated like other human beings.  They’re to be used as a “political weapon”, nothing more.
  • Race – Republicans have managed to lock down the South, helped in no small part by a not-so-transparent use of racism as a political tool.  It even has a very well-established name…the Republicans’ Southern Strategy, a large part of which is based on exploiting racial fears among white southerners.
  • Religion -  Promoting fear and intolerance of Islam, or ANY other religion other than mainstream Christianity has also obviously become a key part of the Republican platform.   Again, Santorum himself could be a poster child for using religious hate as a “potent weapon” in his politics.  Republicans have counted on the “values voters” in the last several election cycles, whipping up paranoia among evangelicals (aka…wackos) about some imagined conspiracy to trample on their religious rights or remove religion from Americans’ every day lives.

Using bigotry, hatred, and promotion of fear has certainly be a winning political hand for Republicans.  God knows there are enough folks in America who share those views, and blindly follow any idiot who is bold enough to come out and actually campaign on a platform of hate and intolerance.

But how long can such a strategy last?   I keep hoping that Americans will see the light and realize you CANNOT build a nation based on hate.  I keep hoping that Republicans’ exploitation of racial, religious, or sexual preference issues is a short-term blip, a trend that can’t last in the long run.  But then you see complete wackos like Rick Santorum get a shocking amount of support in the Republican campaign, and it makes you realize just how much fear, paranoia, and bigotry there is out there.

I’m sure that Biden’s unintentional forcing of Obama’s hand on the gay marriage issue wasn’t something that Obama wanted to touch from a political perspective.  That indeed is why I’ve been disappointed by Obama on many fronts, his lack of conviction on issues such as this, ones where he should be leading the “anti-hatred” bandwagon.   But now that it’s out there, now that Obama has been forced to back gay marriage, I hope he seizes the opportunity. I hope he RELISHES a discussion on gay rights in America. He SHOULD be using the issue as an issue where he can shame Republicans for their platform of hatred.

Given Obama’s wishy-washy nature on tough issues like this though, I’m not holding my breath.

Pamela Geller – Scum of the Week

It seems like I’ve had a lot of “Scums of the week” lately.  What can I say, there’s a lot of people out there that deserve them.  Pamela Geller is one who richly deserves the award, and is someone you could probably give it to about every week.  THIS week’s Geller related issue is a “conference” organized in Detroit to ostensibly talk about a young Muslim woman who was murdered.  Given Geller’s attendance and the attendance of other anti-Islamic bigots, and it’s very clear the “conference” is yet another excuse for a bunch of redneck bigoted pigs to spout their hate.

Geller has a long history of anti-Islamic statements, many of which border on the downright bizarre.  Obama is a favorite target of hers, as she has said on countless occasions that we currently have a “Muslim in the White House”.  A sampling of some of Geller’s more disgusting quotes, from SourceWatch.org:

  • “Obama is a third worlder and a coward. He will do nothing but beat up on our friends to appease his Islamic overlords. All this is going down while Obama plays footsie at his nuclear nonsense campfire — sucking up to Iran’s enablers while beating up our allies.”
  • “It is well-known that Obama allegedly was involved with a crack whore in his youth. Very seedy stuff. Why aren’t [the media] pursuing that story? Find the ho, give her a show! Obama allegedly trafficked in some very deviant practices. Where’s the investigation? . . . Back in the early 80′s, there were only two reasons to travel to Pakistan. Jihad or drugs. I think he went for the drugs and came back with jihad.”
  • “Jews refuse to get on Obama’s Trains”. . . “Obama is pressuring Jews to “evacuate” from parts of Israel? And what Warsaw ghetto does the muhammadan [sic] president have in mind? I think I am gonna hurl. The Jews will not go. The Jews will not submit to this century’s nazis [sic] and Mansourian poser.”
  • (On the passage of health care): “The moochers and the looters, the crooks and degenerates voted at 1 am this morning to rip the constitution to shreds, to rape the American people and to nationalize medicine.”
  • Repeatedly accuses Obama of being a Muslim: Geller’s blog contains 267 posts tagged “Muslim in the White House?”
  • Geller claims that “devout Muslims should be prohibited from military service” because she believes that Adolf Hitler and Nazism were inspired by Islam.
  • In the wake of the terrorist attacks in Norway committed by Anders Breivik, she claimed that the young people killed were bound to become “leaders of the party responsible for flooding Norway with Muslims who refuse to assimilate, who commit major violence against Norwegian natives including violent gang rapes, with impunity, and who live on the dole.”

A lovely woman.  What irks me about pieces of crap like Geller is how they rely on the HATE and bigotry of others to make money.  Hate is a big business in America, with an entire industry built around losers like Geller and the hatred they spew.

The MSNBC story I linked to above has some absolutely scary parts to it.  This line really struck me:

Although many Americans have never encountered a Muslim in person, about 43 percent questioned in a recent Gallup Poll said they felt at least “a little” prejudice against Muslims.

“Many Americans have never encountered a Muslim”?   I guarantee that most Americans have encountered a Muslim, but this line to me epitomizes how many Americans THINK about Islam, as if it’s some foreign religion with no place in America itself.  That ridiculous lead-in to this sentence is a perfect complement to the stat that 43% of Americans said they feel prejudice against Muslims.  OK, America, if you supposedly haven’t ever MET a Muslim…why the HELL do you feel “at least a little prejudice” against them!?!?

It’s no wonder that scum like Geller can thrive in America.  There are one hell of a lot of bigoted, small-minded Americans out there who just eat up the kind of crap that Geller spews.  Congrats Geller on the first of your “scum of the week” awards.

Reasons to Hate Traveling

Business Travel

The "Joys" of business travel...all thanks to inconsiderate people.

There’s a very good reason I haven’t posted for a few days.  I’ve been in Rhode Island all week for a conference.  The conference was nice, but there are few things I dislike more than certain aspects of traveling.

  1. Airport Internet – Given the prevalence of business travelers, given the prevalence of folks wanting internet access, I really hate being stuck in an airport without free internet access. No, DTW in Detroit, I do NOT want to pay for a “Boingo” hotspot just to have internet access for my 2-hour layover.  Instead, in the future I’m much more likely to try to avoid your shitty internet-charging airport.
  2. Loud Airport Cyborgs – I think I could list about a dozen travel issues related to people and their cell phones…the need people seem to have to make a call the MOMENT the plane lands, distracted drivers, restaurant cell phone use, etc.  But the one that bugged me the most this trip were the airport “cyborgs” with what look like semi-permanent head implants, talking as loudly as humanly possible while either strutting around the airport or standing around the gate.  NO, Mr. (yes, 99% of Airport Cyborgs are men) Cyborg Businessman, I do NOT care to hear your conversation with your business buddy that drowns out the rest of the tri-state area.  What’s laughable is that 9 out of 10 of these very loud Cyborg “business” calls sound like no more than mindless chattering, usually with another like-minded Cyborg Businessman with seemingly nothing else to do than bother those around them.  It’s certainly hard to imagine a sophomoric conversation about your golf game or the cute waitress at the bar being important enough to require a headset bio-mechanically welded to your skull.
  3. Boarding the Plane – In what I deem to be the recurring theme of this post, I’ve decided I am FAR too nice, compared to the rest of the human race.  What so difficult to understand about the gate agent saying “keep clear of the boarding area until your zone is called”?  And why must the boarding process be a race?  The most laughable to me is the “honor” of “gold” members or other frequent flyers getting to board the plane first.  On all four of my flight legs this week, the plans were small (CRJ’s?), with no difference in any of the seating, no “first class”.  But yet without fail, about 10 minutes before they start to board the plane, a cadre of Hairy Old White Men (see previous posts!) or Airport Cyborgs line up close to the “red carpet”, and race to show their importance by boarding the plane first.   ESPECIALLY when ALL of the seats were small and cramped, as they were on my flights this week, the LAST thing I want is to sit in the airplane.  But for the “boarding race” crowd, the “prestige” of boarding first evidently outweighs the extreme discomfort of actually sitting on the plane.
  4. Carryons - One of the worst things that happened to air travel was when airlines started charging for baggage. Thus began the infatuation people had with only bringing carryon luggage and bags.  Hence the grumpy guy with a bag that’s CLEARLY too large to fit in the overhead bin, who insists to the gate agent that he’s “done this all the time”.   Then upon boarding, after blocking the aisle for 5 minutes trying to stuff his massive dufflebag in a bin 80% as big as the bag itself, sanity finally prevails and he’s forced to check his bag.   This is directly related to #3 above, and the rush to board, where people will board “out of order”, just in an attempt to avoid the dreaded “planeside bag check” and obtain one of the treasured overhead bins.  Do you know how much more relaxed I am when I travel, than the poor saps who participate in the Carryon Wars?   I check one piece of luggage big enough to hold nearly all my stuff, and don’t have to worry about lugging bulky bags through the terminal, don’t have to worry about rushing to board, and don’t have to worry about finding space for my bags in the overhead bins.
  5. “Sprawlers” and the armrest - Another case of me being FAR too nice compared to other folks.  Let’s face it, space is at a premium in coach.  But the LAST thing I want is to be rubbing elbows with the 300-lb Cyborg businessman for the duration of the flight.  Leave…Me…Alone, and keep your body and personal items in your own tiny little traveling space.  But, alas, for most folks (and by “Folks”, again I refer primarily to men, since they are by FAR the worst at this), it seems to be a fight to carve out as much space for themselves as possible.  Nowhere is this more evident than the armrests between seats.  By the very nature of airplane configuration, if YOU place your arm on the armrest, the person next to you has less space.  You are sending the NOT so subtle message that YOU are more important than your row-mate, and deserve more space than your neighbor.  I believe the last time I actually used the armrest in an airplane was 1985 or so.  I keep waiting for another “nice” person to be seated next to me, where the armrest is a DMZ, without intrusion or competition between your and your neighbors’ elbows.  It’s been 27 years of traveling, and I’m still waiting…
  6. Reclining seats – In yet another case of me being too nice…I never recline my seat in an airplane.  For one, it’s not like doing so suddenly thrusts you into a realm of extreme comfort.  But more importantly, I just don’t want to cramp the space of the person behind me.  Silly me, for trying to be nice.  It’s always SO pleasant to sit in a plane with your knees up around your ears, and then after the plane lifts off, the person in front of you, jams their seat back as far as you go, leaving you little room to do anything other than contemplate your miserable existence for the duration of the flight.
  7. The half-can of soda – Really, Delta?  Are your profit margins SO razor-thin, that the whole operation depends upon only providing a half-can of soda during the wonderful “refreshment” stage of the flight?  I’m an adult.  When flying all day, you get dehydrated in the dry air of an airplane cabin.   When you offer your meager drinks and snacks, is it too much to ask to get an ENTIRE 12-oz can of juice or soda?  How much are you saving by pouring half a can into a plastic cup, and saving the other half for another flier?  Please, Delta, just add 25 cents to the price of my ticket to offset the cost of treating me like an adult and giving me an entire can of soda.
  8. Rental Car checkout -  GOOD…FREAKIN…GOD.  I MADE the rental car reservation months ago.  I gave you my name, address, payment information, telephone and cellphone, mother’s maiden name, name of my pet hamster when I was 6 years old…WHAT…THE…HELL…ELSE are you entering into the computer when I arrive at the rental car counter to get my car?  Why the HELL should it take 10 minutes to check out a car?
  9. Driving in a strange city – I guess this could just be entitled “driving in general”, given the rudeness of drivers, but things seem amplified when you’re driving in a strange city.  I’m sorry, local resident, unlike you, I CANNOT talk on my cellphone and weave all over the road while I’m trying to get to my destination.  I’m sorry I can ONLY go 5 MPH over the speed limit, clearly not fitting into the local culture where everybody seems to treat the speed limit more as a suggestion than as a law.  I hope you take comfort in riding my ass, violently swerving into the other lane to pass, giving me a stare (or a finger), and then violently swerving back in front of me and cutting me off.   Never mind that with all the heavy traffic on the highway, you’ve only gained 100 feet of real estate.  Never mind that all you’ve done is ensured your arrive at your destination 1.8 seconds sooner than you would have otherwise.  It’s ALL about you making a “statement”, and ensuring that I know my relative place in the world compared to you.  Bravo, local driver…Bravo.  Well played.
  10. Noisy hotel neighbors – One more case of me being FAR too nice.  When I get to a hotel room, I’m as quiet as a church mouse.  If I have the TV on, I have it on very low.  If I’m moving about the room, I’m trying not to stomp on the floor and bother the person below me.  If I’m traveling with other folks and want to talk, have a beer, etc…I DON’T turn my hotel room into a temporary, neighborhood bar.  When I’m in the hall I DON’T stand in the hallway outside of other people’s rooms and have a very loud conversation.   When I get back to my room late or night, I DON’T slam the door and wake up the entire floor. In other words, when I stay in a hotel room, I actually try to be cognizant of the fact that there are other PEOPLE around me.

I could go on, but you get the idea.  Traveling doesn’t HAVE to be a nightmare.  If only people were considerate of those around them, business travel could be tolerable.   But alas…people are, well, people.

Sen. Grassley – Crossing a Line

On the blogosphere, partisanship and strong language are generally the norm.  As normal every day citizens, bloggers venting about a topic certainly aren’t averse to using harsh, abusive language.  I certainly have done my share of that from time to time.  Rick Perry, Sarah Palin, Mitch McConnell, Rick Santorum, and John Boehner have all felt my verbal wrath at times.  Rush Limbaugh has CERTAINLY felt my verbal wrath, given the very public, hate-filled messages he spouts from his radio show every day.  Given some of my past posts, I suppose it could be viewed as a wee bit hypocritical to say what I’m about to say, but Senator Chuck Grassley from Iowa has DEFINITELY crossed a line with a tweet he made over the weekend.

The Senate USED to be the place of “gentlemen” (and women) Senators, where partisanship took a back seat to civility and cooperation, at least in a MUCH stronger sense than civility and cooperation has been a cornerstone of the House.  Those days are gone.  Republicans in general have followed Rush down into the gutter, increasingly relying on stirring up hatred to drive their politics.  Evidently the Senate is no longer immune to that trend either.

In Sen. Grassley’s tweet yesterday, he said “Constituents askd why i am not outraged at PresO attack on supreme court independence. Bcause Am ppl r not stupid as this x prof of con law.”  When Grassley’s staff were asked about the tweet, the Grassley contingent took full ownership of the statement, stating that the tweet did indeed come from Grassley himself, and that he wasn’t backing down on anything he said.

It’s one thing for a sitting Senator and the President of the United States to disagree with each other.  It’s QUITE another for an active Senator to personally attack the office of the President of the United States, and call the President “stupid“.   What bothers me the most about the current crop of Republican Senators and Representatives is that there seems to be absolutely NO respect for the President of the United States.   It’s damned hard to have a functioning government when basic disagreement on policy has morphed into a complete lack of respect, and a complete unwillingness to even LISTEN to the other side of a story, much less cooperate and compromise to reach a solution on an issue.

It’s one thing for bloggers or every day Americans to call out a politician.  I don’t like the messages of pure hatred that have permeated political discussion, but hey, it’s America, we all have the right to have our voices heard.   However, having our highest elected officials hurl personal insults at each other crosses a line, and damages the structure and functioning of our political and governmental framework.  Senator Chuck Grassley, congratulations…you have won my “Scum of the Week” award.

Right-wing Fear and Paranoia

Barack Obama

Yes, America, it's true. Your president, the leader of the free world...is a black man. Right-wingers can point to baseless conspiracy theories all they want. They can completely distort the facts in an effort to discredit Obama's leadership. But at the end of the day, for many of these folks, what it all really boils down to is that they have a (GASP!) black man as their president.

MSNBC this morning has a story about the incredible rise in the militia groups since Obama was elected in 2008.  Militia groups, hate groups, what MSNBC calls “patriot” groups (HAH!) all have  experienced dramatic increases in numbers.  The story cites the “fear of a black president” as one reason for the initial rise, and “increasing fear of a Obama re-election” as a reason numbers continue to rise.

What…the…HELL…do folks have to justify that “fear” of Obama, or a continued Obama presidency?  What do Repubs and conservatives in general have to complain about with regard to Obama?  Obama inherited the worst economy, the worst recession, since the Great Depression.  Despite woes continuing in Europe and elsewhere….the American economy is turning around.  The American auto industry was saved, thanks to the decision to ignore the ignorant public who vehemently opposed the auto industry bailouts.  Obama made a daring decision to go after Bin Laden on foreign soil, something you KNOW conservative hawks would be CROWING about…if it weren’t a black, democratic president that made the call.    Obama pushed through a health care bill that the (ignorant) public hated, but like the auto bailout, public opinion is turning.  Even REPUBLICANS can’t ignore the facts forever, and the facts are that ObamaCare provides health insurance coverage for 25 million more Americans, AND non-partisan analysis shows it will SAVE money over the next 10 years.

So what is it, right-wing nuts?  What do you REALLY have to complain about?  You’ve got many on the right calling this the “worst presidency” in the history of the Nation, despite the obvious successes Obama has had.  When the contraception “debate” bubbled up over the last few weeks, you had Newt Gingrich saying that the MOMENT Obama is re-elected, he will “declare war on the Catholic Church”.  You’ve got these right-wing, hate-mongering wackos noted in the MSNBC story who are “fearful” of what a continued Obama presidency would do.

OK, Repubs, PLEASE tell me how America has seemingly fallen apart under Obama’s reign, in your eyes.  Do you have ANY actual facts to support that opinion?  Right-wing religious wackos…PLEASE tell me how Obama has undermined religious freedom in ANY way.   Gun-totin’, militia wackos…PLEASE tell me how Obama’s presidency is bringing about the end of civilization as we know it.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at how overboard the Right has gone in terms of the obvious hate, fear, and paranoia.  When folks like Rush Limbaugh are spewing hateful messages day in and day out, when you have Fox “News” banging the drums of hate for all things “liberal”, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that the right-wing wackos have (again) simply ignored reality and made up their own little conspiracy stories regarding Obama.

I also guess I shouldn’t be surprised that 3 years into a Obama presidency, you STILL have wackos like Sheriff Joe Arpaio who are insisting Obama has a fake birth certificate, and really isn’t a U.S. citizen.  After all, Obama is (GASP!!)…Black!!  Yes, it’s true!! We have a BLACK president!!  I have NO DOUBT that for a VERY large number of folks involved in the hate or militia groups, that it’s simply a matter of good ol’ fashioned bigotry.  I have NO DOUBT that for a VERY large number of the Republican electorate who have a “problem” with Obama, that the “problem” stems more from Obama’s skin color than what he’s actually done as president.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at all the right-wing fear and paranoia.  But I’m definitely disappointed where these folks have taken American civility, decency, and respect for your fellow-man.

The Santorum/Graham “Brand” of Christianity

Rick Santorum and "faith"

Rick Santorum and Rev. Franklin Graham to me are a great example of what being a Christian should NOT be about. I find it repulsive that the Santorum "brand" of Christianity, a brand that FAR too many Americans follow, uses religion as a tool to bludgeon those who look, act, or think differently, rather than using it as a tool to promote tolerance.

I really don’t care what people believe personally.  If you are Hindu, Muslim, Christian…whatever.  Believe what you want.  No matter your religion, the underlying morals are generally the same.  Be nice to each other.  Don’t kill each other.   Don’t steal from each other.   All the major religions have the same general moral guidance.   In theory.  In reality?   The words are all there.  The major tenets of the major religions all SOUND good.  But how do “religious” people actually act?

Why is it that those who CLAIM to be the most “religious”, are also very often the most hateful, bigoted people on the planet?  My biggest pet peeve in life…the bigotry, hypocrisy, and pure HATRED that stem from religion.   As we learn more about Rick Santorum, the more I’m convinced he’s NOT just a harmless simpleton with a view of the world right out of the 1600s.  No, as we learn more, the more he opens his mouth, the more I’m starting to realize he’s downright evil.  And, no surprise to me, alot of it stems from what HE purports to be a strength…his religious faith.

There has been a tremendous amount of controversy over comments Santorum has made over the last week, regarding Obama’s brand of Christianity.  You see, for bigots and hypocrites like Rick Santorum, it’s NOT ENOUGH for Obama to be a Church-going, long-time Christian.   No sirree.  He doesn’t have the right BRAND of Christianity.  In fact, from hearing Santorum speak over the last week, you’d think Obama actually was a cultish devil-worshiper, rather than a Christian.

Ok, you say, perhaps it’s just “dirty politics” (is there another kind?).  After all, Santorum is running to become president, so of course, in America, that means you have to talk about your opponent like they’re the worst thing since Hitler (Something, in fact, that Santorum HAS alluded to with regard to Obama!!).    What about a fine, “upstanding”, representative of Christianity?  Billy Graham’s son, “Rev.” (hah) Franklin Graham, talked today about Obama’s faith…or lack thereof.  Graham’s comments?

Graham said he CANNOT categorically say Obama isn’t a Muslim.  He also says that Islam has gotten a “Free Pass” from Obama.  Interesting comment…I didn’t realize that the American President was supposed to go to war with the Islamic faith.  He also referred to Obama as a “Son of Islam”, given that his father’s side of the family came from an Islamic background.

Who could blame Graham for his ignorant comments? After all, Obama is  (gasp!!) BLACK!!  And he once had an Islamic relative!!  Of COURSE he can’t be a Christian!  At least not the same BRAND of Christianity as (old white men) Graham and Santorum.   All of this reminds me of my junior high days, and the “clique-ness” of adolescents.  Religion for FAR too many has become not a place to ponder your humanity or man’s role in some “higher” order.

No, religion has become the equivalent of that “popular” kid in junior high who wouldn’t let you sit at the same lunch table.   You SAY you’re a Christian?  HAH!!  You’re not MY brand of Christian!!  ESPECIALLY since you LOOK differently from me!  You MUST be a Muslim!!!!  No lunch for you!! Not at MY lunch table!! Go eat with the “heathens” at the end of the cafeteria!!!

As I said, I don’t care what personal religious beliefs people have. But MY GOD, don’t people see the hypocrisy of their actions, compared to what their religion supposedly teaches them?   The BIGGEST BIGOTS in the U.S. seem to be those with a “strong moral foundation”, as provided by Christianity.   One of the most repulsive types of people to me are those that cloak themselves in their religion, all the while spouting pure HATE and vitriol for gays, people of other faiths, people of other races, etc.

“Reverend” Graham?  Given your actions, I consider you as much a “Reverend” as I do my pet cocker spaniel (not that my cocker spaniel is an evil bigot, but you get the idea).   I could simply state the obvious.  What if Obama were white?  Would Santorum, would “Reverend” Graham, be attacking Obama on religious grounds at all!?!??  I truly doubt it.

There is SO much hate and vitriol from the right, directed towards Obama.   It doesn’t help that hate and vitriol might as well become the new GOP slogan.  But it goes far beyond political discourse or dysfunction.   Church sponsored bigotry and hypocrisy is just a microcosm of America overall.  The Church CLAIMS to value “the golden rule”, kind treatment of others, etc….but in reality, has become a mechanism to spread hate of ALL other religions.

America?  We CLAIM to be the big “melting pot”, a country that cherishes diversity and views it as a strength.  In reality?  Our actions towards each other speak volumes on the horrors within the human heart and mind.

So, for all you good ol’ “REAL” (hah) Christians out there in America…next time you’re sitting in church for the Sunday sermon, how about actually listening to it?  How about actually taking it to heart?  How about using your religion as a tool for TOLERANCE, rather than as a sledgehammer for breaking down people who don’t act, look, or think like you?
