Good Jobs Report – Republicans Upset

Last month’s jobs report was abysmal, much lower than analysts expected.  After many months of improving numbers, it certainly was a downer, and prompted some to speculate that either the recovery had stalled, or even that we were headed back into recession.  Yesterday, the latest job’s report came out, and the numbers were not only solid, but revisions to the past 2 months numbers pushed those jobs numbers markedly higher.

All in all…very good news!  Wall Street certainly reacted to the jobs report as a great sign the economy is recovering.  The Dow temporarily topped 15,000 for the first time, and finished at an all-time high.  The pundits wrote about the jobs report as good news, a sign that the “spring stall” we’ve had in recent years wasn’t nearly as much of a threat this year.

So how did Republicans react?  As they ALWAYS do when ANYTHING good happens under the Obama presidency…by loudly pronouncing the darkest, most pessimistic interpretation of the news, and then squarely placing “blame” on the Obama administration. RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said that thanks to ObamaCare, future jobs numbers are “more likely to slow down than speed up”.  Cheery. John Boehner’s quote?  “We need to seize opportunities the president has been ignoring, and focus on growing our economy rather than growing more government”.    Fox News?  While every other major news website had a story about the good jobs report yesterday morning, on Fox News’ website, the jobs report was curiously absent from the front page.  Shocking!  A “news” organization (ha-ha) ignoring good news for Americans?

It must be awfully damn depressing to be a Republican right now.  Republicans are SO full of hate for this president that even GOOD news must be interpreted in a negative light.  Republicans, is there ANYTHING you enjoy in life?  Is there ANY good news that you don’t somehow turn around into an Obama negative?  Is this how Americans are supposed to live their lives, focused on hatred, negativity, and pessimism about the future?

Pat Toomy, Republican Senator and co-sponsor of the Manchin-Toomy gun-control bill that recently failed, said the bill failed because “There were some on my side who did not want to be seen helping the president do something he wanted to get done, just because the president wanted to do it.” That’s a shockingly honest, but shockingly depressing statement.  Republicans have become SO incredibly ideological that they don’t even CARE about the direction of the country.  The don’t CARE about a good jobs report.  They don’t CARE that the economy is improving.  Even with 90% of Americans supporting background checks, Republicans ADMITTEDLY voted against it, just because they don’t want to do something Obama supports.

Republicans would rather see the entire country collapse, so they can point their fingers and blame Obama.  What a pathetic party platform. What an incredibly sad way to live your life…

Wayne LaPierre and the NRA – The True Terrorists

It certainly has been interesting seeing the aftermath of the Boston bombings, the hunt for the suspects, and the reactions after one was killed and the other captured.  I’m not trivializing the bombing.  It’s horrific event, perpetrated by a couple of very screwed up, evil men.  However…in what many are calling the first “terrorist” killing in the U.S. since 9-11, there were 3 people hurt, along with several score injured.

On April 15th, the day of the bombing, there were ELEVEN Americans killed by guns.  The day after, on Tuesday, there were FOURTEEN Americans killed by guns.  The next day?  FIFTEEN gun deaths.  And so on…and so on…and so on.  Over 3,500 Americans have died due to gun violence, JUST since Newtown happened in December…a four month period.  That’s an average of about 30 deaths per day.  Gun deaths in the United States routinely top 12,000 a year, and nobody bats an eye.  An AVERAGE day in America and many more are killed by guns than were killed by the one “terrorist” event in the United States since 9-11.

But then again…what constitutes a “terrorist”?  If a Muslim guy blows up a bomb at a marathon?  You bet, says America!  It’s “terrorism”!  It’s a no-brainer!  A bomb is involved, and a Muslim is involved!!

But what if a young white man who is NOT Muslim commits mass murder?  Is it called “terrorism” by the press?  Are there calls to suspend Miranda rights?  Are there calls to suspend due process under the law?  No.  If a white NON-MUSLIM commits mass murder, it’s a mental health issue, the act of a troubled young man. It’s NOT ever labeled as “terrorism”.  An young guy equally as troubled as the Tsarnaev’s from Boston walks into a grade school in Newtown and takes the lives of over 20 young children, a death toll that far surpasses Boston, but the “terrorism” label was never applied to that case.

So again…what constitutes ”terrorism”?  What consitutes a “terrorist”? ”Official” definitions for “terrorism” usually infer violence with a political purpose.  However, in America, since 9-11, it seems that the term “terrorist” has unfortunately taken on religious connotations, with the religious background of the person evidently more important than the crimes that were committed.  Were there any political claims made by the Tsarnaev brothers for the Boston bombings?  Wouldn’t a “terrorist” claim responsibility in the name of a cause?  The Tsarnaev’s certainly didn’t attempt to claim responsibility, and certainly didn’t pronounce the bombing was for some political cause.  However, the event is widely labeled as “terrorism”, a label that has become further entrenched in Americans’ minds after it became known the brothers had at least some involvement in the Islamic faith.

It’s sad that we can spend SO much time and energy focusing on controlling “terrorism” in the United States, but completely ignore “everyday” violence that claims the lives of MANY thousands more Americans than does “terrorism”.

If “terrorism” can be defined as a “violence with a political motivation”, then America is FULL of (as yet) unrecognized terrorists.  Look at how political the issue of gun control has become.  Even a simple, sensible, straight-forward piece of legislation to increase background checks and keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill is turned into a political argument.  When I see THOUSANDS of Americans being killed every year by gun violence, I see MANY violent deaths that are ultimately due to political motivations.

With THOUSANDS of highly preventable gun-violence deaths in America each year, if we are to follow the standard definition of “terrorism”, those that ENABLE those gun violence deaths should be defined as “terrorists”, just as those who provide bomb-making equipment and training are considered as “terrorists”.  If “Violence ultimately due to a political motivation” is the definition of a “terrorist”, then there’s little doubt that Wayne LaPierre, the head of the NRA, should be considered the most dangerous “terrorist” in America.  Thanks to the efforts of LaPierre and the NRA, criminals and violent mentally ill persons can easily obtain weaponry that no other Western culture allows such easy access to.

Boston was a sad event to be sure.  The Tsarnaev brothers were sick, evil human beings.  But it’s stunning to me that Americans can tolerate the equivalent of 10 Boston bombings  PER DAY in America, in terms of deaths due to gun violence, and not get nearly as worked up as they do about a once-in-a-decade event.

Gutless…

Senator "Tiny Penis" McConnell

Senator Mitch McConnell, leader of the tiny penis GOP Senate.

Gutless.  Just one of many adjectives that come to mind as I think of the GOP.  Today, the term most definitely applies to GOP Senators.  Other adjectives that come to mind?  Selfish.  Corrupt.  Greedy.  Myopic.  Or, let’s just call it like it is…they’re just plain evil.

Today, a GOP Senate filibuster managed to derail a rather straightforward and sensible bill that would expand background checks for gun owners.  Just a few months removed from Newtown…just a few months removed from over 20 CHILDREN being gunned down by a nut armed to the teeth…our beloved GOP Senators decided that their next election was more important than the safety of our nation’s children.  Our gutless, piece-of-shit GOP Senators decided that getting that next campaign check was more important than barring criminals or the mentally ill from obtaining weapons.

Mitch McConnell, KING of the gutless, tiny-penis, evil piece-of-shit GOP Senators, has REFUSED to even meet with the families from Newtown.  What’s wrong, Mitch?  Having a little trouble sleeping at night?  Having a hard time dealing with the fact that you are helping to ENABLE the slaughter of children?

No…wait.  That’s giving these pieces of shit WAY too much credit.  It’s PAINFULLY obvious that basic morality and a normal conscience aren’t what get you to Washington.  What gets you to Washington is the single-minded focus on that campaign check.  What gets you to Washington is placing your OWN status and power above the well-being of your constituents.  What gets you to Washington is NOT worrying about the consequences of your actions, as long as the ultimate goal…your next re-election…is obtained.

Gutless?  Yes.  But perhaps evil is indeed a better choice of adjective.

Tiny Penis Men Renew Fight to Compensate with Guns

Just a few months after the Newtown tragedy, America is getting back to normal.  With our incredibly short attention spans, the deaths of a few dozen children seems like a distant memory for most folks.  With the incredibly pathetic, half-hearted efforts by the Obama administration and state governments to strengthen gun legislation, we’re returning to the status quo.  Tiny-penis men across America are ramping up the fight to compensate for their shortcomings by ensuring their right to carry the largest, most destructive weapon possible.

The fight has been spearheaded by tiny-penis men in my very own state of South Dakota.  Yesterday, tiny-penis governor Dennis Daugaard signed a bill that makes South Dakota the first state that allows teachers to carry guns in class.  The bill was sponsored by tiny-penis state legislator Scott Craig, a freshmen Republican (duh), who states that now “dominoes will start to fall, people will see it’s reasonable.”  Of course it’s “reasonable”!  Do you have kids?  Picture your kid’s teacher, carrying a gun in class, trying to fight off a nut with an assault rifle.  What?  A little difficult to picture that in your mind?  Hard to see that as more “reasonable” than simply disallowing access to assault rifles?  This is the 2nd bold effort by tiny-penis South Dakota men to ensure gun rights.  Last week, they voted down a bill that would have limited gun access to mentally ill people who have been deemed “dangerous” to others.  Just like tiny-penis men, crazy people have gun rights too!!!

The tiny-penis men of South Dakota are hardly the only tiny-penis men fighting for their right to compensate.  Kansas, a state that along with South Dakota is known for having a large population of weak, tiny-penis men, is considering a bill to greatly expand concealed gun carrying on college campuses.

Compensation efforts by tiny-penis men extend all the way to the Federal level.  At Congressional hearings this week, miniscule-penis Senator Lindsey Graham stated he owned an AR-15, arguing for folks to imagine a scenario in a post-disaster world where government breaks down and roaming gangs are a danger!  EXACTLY!  WELL thought out, tiny-penis Senator Graham!!  This is EXACTLY the kind of realistic scenario that screams for the right of tiny-penis men to carry large weapons!  In a “Mad Max” post-apocalyptic world that is sure to come, tiny-penis men NEED automatic weapons to fend off gangs of evil-doers!!

FEAR NOT, TINY-PENIS MEN!!!   In America, there are SO many of you weak, tiny-member men fighting for your compensatory gun-carrying rights, that I truly doubt you’ll never have to worry about your right to carry gigantic weapons that you’ll never have use for any practical purpose other than trying to overcome your own insecurity.  With tiny-penis men like Lindsey Graham, Scott Craig, and Dennis Daugaard fighting for you, your right to access massive weapons will forever be secure.

South Dakota Legislature: Crazy People Have Gun Rights Too!!!

You gotta love the South Dakota legislature.  They don’t let little things like “fact” or “science” get in the way, as they’ve repeatedly shown in their ground-breaking attempts to somehow legislate away climate change.  They flaunt their world-respected power, voting on United Nations resolutions as if the United Nations gives a rat’s ass what the South Dakota Legislature thinks.  This week, they’ve continued to flash their “conservative cred”.  Hey, they’ve got competition from the Kansas Legislature and other red-state wackos!  Gotta prove who is the MOST conservative!!

To that end, yesterday a committee killed a bill that would have restricted firearm access to the mentally ill in South Dakota.  The law would have submitted the names of “dangerous” individuals to the federal database used for background checks, ensuring they wouldn’t have access to firearms.  Currently, South Dakota does NOT provide that information, meaning the mentally ill, including those deemed to be dangerous, could sail through a background check and buy firearms.

Makes sense, right?  Restricting gun access to people who have been deemed to be dangerous?  A no-brainer, right?  HELL NO!!  THIS IS SOUTH DAKOTA!! Remember, we’re trying to compete with the Kansas’s of the world for who can be the most conservative, be it in denying evolution, legislating away climate change, or ensuring that a bunch of hairy old white men in the South Dakota Legislature control what women do with their bodies.

CRAZY PEOPLE HAVE GUN RIGHTS TOO!!  Even people deemed to be DANGEROUS have gun rights!! YOU’LL TAKE OUR GUNS WHEN YOU PRY THEM FROM OUR COLD, DEAD FINGERS!!!!  Rep. Melissa Magstadt said she was “worried” about taking the right to bear arms away from the mentally ill before they had committed a violent act, even if mental assessment indicated they were dangerous to themselves or others.  BRILLIANT, Ms. Magstadt!! We wait until AFTER they commit a violent act before even considering taking away guns from crazy people!!

Rep. Scott Ecklund said the bill would “add to the struggle of people with mental illness”.  Yes, because NOTHING soothes the mentally ill like having a cache of weapons.  It’s MUCH more important that the dangerous mentally ill have gun access and, evidently, less of a “struggle”, than it is to protect the rest of the population!

Kudos, South Dakota Legislature!!  Kansas, here we come!  You may (currently) have us beat on wacko evolution legislation, but we DARE you to touch our conservative cred on the issue of guns!!

Following Congress’ example: Sorry Ford, Not Paying my Car Loan

Ford Edge

Sorry Ford, I've decided to follow Congress' example. Just as they're refusing to authorize an increase in the debt ceiling, just as they're refusing to pay for things they've already authorized, I will no longer pay my car loan until I get major concessions!

I’ve decided that precedent has been set by the best and brightest that America has to offer…our GOP-led House of Representatives.  I’ve decided to follow the shining example set by the GOP.  Ford…I’m no longer going to pay the loan bills for the car I bought last February.

Yes, Ford, I did take ownership of a shiny new Ford Edge last February.  Yes, I signed all the paperwork, agreeing to make my monthly payments on the car.  But despite receiving the car, despite agreeing to pay for it, I’m going to follow the GOP example and not pay for it unless you, Ford, agree to make concessions to me.  I didn’t spring for the integrated DVD/entertainment system in the car when I bought it.  Just for the heck of it, I’d also like to upgrade my wheel/hubcaps to an even shinier more intricate style.  In exchange for these concessions, Ford, I will make my car payments for a period of one year.  Then we’ll have to renegotiate and you’ll have to offer more concessions before I agree to pay further bills.

OK…sounds ridiculous, right?  But this is the new “logic” from the GOP-led House.  Yes, I know “logic” and “GOP House” are two phrases that are rarely ever uttered in the same sentence, but the same principle applied.  Congress sets spending and approves it. As a result of what Congress has already approved and what the president has signed, we have bills to pay.  We have a deficit.  But the GOP has decided to hold hostage our ability to actually PAY for the spending they’ve already approved.  As with the last fiasco of a debt-ceiling “negotiation”, the GOP intends to not authorize an increase in our debt ceiling without significant concessions and spending cuts in return.  In other words…they don’t want to pay the bills for what they’ve already purchased.

Given my cynical nature, it’s probably not a surprise when I say the majority of the American electorate are dumb as my (very sweet but stupid) Cocker Spaniel Cooper.  In a poll, a strong majority of Americans were against raising the debt limit.  In other words, a strong majority of Americans are stupid and unreasonable, much like our GOP-led House of Representatives.  The debt ceiling is a formality, a mechanism to allow for our bills to be paid.  Congress sets all spending levels, so it’s incredibly ballsy of them to use the debt-ceiling as a political ploy to highlight deficit spending in Washington.

Obama has said he will not negotiate over the debt ceiling increase.  Good…I hope he sticks to that, because the debt ceiling shouldn’t be something that ever needs to be negotiated.  It shouldn’t even need authorization by Congress, it should simply be required that the U.S. Treasury have the capability to always pay the bills that Congress has already authorized.  The “trillion-dollar platinum coin” issue has been making the rounds as an option for Obama to bypass Congress if the GOP continues to play with economic disaster by making the debt-ceiling a political football.  Frankly, I hope Obama does it.  I hope he bypasses Congress and shows the world how incredibly ridiculous the House GOP is.

I’m also glad to see Obama’s Cabinet picks.  I’m glad to see Joe Biden say that Obama is willing to go it alone on gun control and sign executive orders to address gun violence.  Enough is enough.  Obama is a 2nd-term president, winning in an election where Democrats also made gains in the Senate despite having many more Democratic Senators up for reelection than Republicans, and winning in an election where Democrats HAD MORE THAN A MILLION more national votes for the House than did Republicans.  The American people have spoken, and they chose Democratic leadership.  Obama should be willing to stock his Cabinet with whomever he pleases without GOP whining or threats of filibuster, especially since confirmation of cabinet posts has been a formality in the past.  If a GOP is more concerned about campaign contributions and politics than about the safety of our children, a reasonably popular 2nd-term president should be able to do what he can to make sure gun violence is addressed.

Let the madness stop.  End the political gridlock.  It looks like Obama has gotten the message and is standing his ground (finally).  In the meantime, I’ll keep paying my car loan…

Slate – U.S. Gun Deaths since Sandy Hook

Gun Deaths vs Gun Ownership

From BusinessInsider.com, a graphic showing the obvious, near linear relationship between gun ownership and gun deaths, by country. In the U.S., we have, by far, the highest rate of gun ownership. Other than Mexico, with their ongoing drug war, we also have the highest rate of death by firearm. OK NRA...do you STILL say that gun control laws are ineffective?

From Slate.com, a site that every day has been tracking people killed by guns since the incident at Sandy Hook in Newtown, Connecticut.  Man…talk about a depressing page, especially since they show little symbols that show the breakdown by age and sex.  Incidents like Sandy Hook obviously make the news, but in terms of total number of U.S. gun deaths, the day Sandy Hook occurred wasn’t shockingly higher than other “normal” days in the U.S.  There were more people killed by guns on Christmas Eve than were killed at Sandy Hook.

The number of people killed in Great Britain by guns?  Recent yearly numbers have been around 50 or lower.  In the U.S. in recent years? Between 10,000 and 13,000 murders a year with guns.  Even at the low end…on average, more people are murdered by firearms in the U.S. every TWO DAYS than are in Great Britain in a given year.

But yet, you have the NRA coming out and saying that gun control laws are “ineffective”, that the only way to stop armed people is by putting MORE armed people out on the streets.  Obviously, gun control laws are EXTREMELY effective, as evidence from other countries shows.  It’s one of our greatest failures as a people that Americans value a culture of guns more than they value the very lives of our citizens.

Today’s Rememberance…and The Average NRA “Member”

Average NRA "Member"

I've had multiple blog posts about my feelings about the typical NRA "member". Today's gutless comments from NRA leader Wayne LaPierre, offered just a few moments after a touching remembrance of Newton's Sandy Hook victims, certainly reinforces my feeling about gun-toting wackos and their need to "compensate" for other things they seemingly lack in life.

I have the day off, getting ready for a weekend of family celebration and fun. While running errands this morning, I was stopped cold in my tracks when I passed a TV and saw a “special report” breaking into regular programming, as the TV stations carried a remembrance and moment of silence for the 27 kids and teachers slaughtered last week in Newtown, Connecticut. I stood there next to a lady and her daughter as it started. The daughter was a beautiful young girl who had to be around the same age as the innocent 1st graders who were gunned down last week. As the moment of silence began, the television carried a loud bell chiming 27 times, once for each life lost. With each chime came a picture of the victims…27 times…in alphabetical order, until the last, a 6-year old Allison Wyatt, was shown. Miss Wyatt looked remarkably similar to the young girl standing next to her mom, and the already flowing tears of the mom next to me turned into a full-body sobbing as the last bell chimed, and the TV lingered on this last victim. I’m a guy, so I’m not supposed to react that way in public, right? While I managed to suppress the full-body sobbing of the mother next to me, I also had tears on my face as the moment ended and they resumed normal programming. I’m sure that any parent with a young child felt the same at that moment. I would hope ANY human being felt the same at that moment.

Just a little later in the morning, National Rifle Association leader Wayne LaPierre provided the NRA’s first public statement after the massacre of a week ago. LaPierre, as noted by NBC, took a “defiant” tone, stating that “the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun“.  I’m sure the 20 families with children slain in Newtown took comfort in LaPierre’s statements.  I’m sure that family of Allison Wyatt and the other beautiful young children feel comforted to know that the NRA is working to solve the problem by recommending armed guards at every school across the nation. I’m sure that families of gun violence victims across the nation take heart in the notion that the NRA will be fighting the evil media, Hollywood, and the music industry, the TRUE perpetrators of the culture of violence in the United States, according to Mr. LaPierre.

After all, it’s not the GUNS that perpetuate a violent gun-based culture in the U.S., right?  It’s not groups like the NRA that perpetuate gun violence, right?  There’s no blame to be assigned to the NRA’s insistence that private citizens have the same access to weapons of mass destruction as do our military soldiers, right? No!  Of course not!  Don’t be silly!!  It’s an evil media misrepresenting the NRA and a gun-based culture!  It’s Hollywood sensationalizing the USE of the weapons that the NRA endorses!  It’s popular music that glamorizes gun violence that results in freely available semi-automatic weapons being used to gun down 20 children in the span of a few minutes!!

It was quite the stark contrast this morning, seeing the incredibly moving remembrance of the Sandy Hook victims, and just a little bit later, hearing the incredibly callous and out-of-touch comments from NRA’s LaPierre.

Bear with me for a moment as I get to my point here, but…I’m a scientist.  A large part of my job is communicating the work of my team with outside scientists and other potential users of our research and data.  When I was in high school and early in college, I was scared to death to speak in public.  The turning point for me?  Experience, especially after becoming a teaching assistant in grad school, but a large part of the turnaround for me was also seeing first-hand that the biggest BLOWHARDS, those who sometimes seem to be the confident with other people, are, in actuality, the most insecure (and the most full of shit).  I’ve said it out here many times…it’s those folks that are incredibly insecure, those that are the LEAST sure of themselves, who are also often the ones who feel the need to brag…to gloat…to ACT “confident” in public.

Hence my analogy to the average NRA “member” above.  Disgusting display by Mr. LaPierre today, but it’s nothing new to the insecure, out-of-touch nuts that populate the NRA.  If guns are a big part of your life…you’re definitely compensating for “shortcomings” somewhere else in your life.

Huckabee: Guns not the problem, it’s a “God” problem

After what’s happened in Connecticut, there’s been the typical reaction after one of these (all too common) events…an outcry for gun control by many, and a defense of guns by the testosterone-driven loser gun crowd.  The one that takes the cake for me though is Mike Huckabee, who says that changing gun laws won’t change anything, but instead, the reason for the shooting was a lack of “God” in our schools.

Yes, Mr. Huckabee, THAT’S the reason a wacko with 3 firearms goes into a school and starts blasting away at little kids.  If ONLY those kids were being raised in a religious setting, this never would have happened.

We’re the only “western” nation with such lax control on gun purchase and possession.  In countries where gun control laws are very strict, this type of event simply doesn’t happen. IN ONE EVENT, this man killed twice as many people as were killed in Great Britain by guns in a typical YEAR.  PLEASE, loser, testosterone (or politically) driven gun wackos…SPARE US THE CRAP about gun laws not mattering.  Gun violence simply isn’t much of an issue in countries with strict gun laws.

It’s not a lack of “god”, Mr. Huckabee.  It’s about a gun culture in the U.S., where a bunch of men with tiny little pinky-sized penises are trying to compensate for their inherent lack of confidence in their own manhood (is that direct enough of a point?).   It’s about a political culture where wimpy politicians are too scared of the NRA to DO WHAT’S FREAKIN’ RIGHT, to prevent such slaughters.  It’s about an American culture so used to gun violence, that even an event like this will largely be forgotten by this time next week.

Do you want teachers spanking your kids?

No Spank

Americans already are MUCH more likely than people of other nations to be victims of violence, to be raped, murdered, shot, executed, or assaulted. I guess it's no surprise that we're also much more likely to endorse the use of physical pain to punish our children.

Time magazine had a recent article about spanking as a form of punishment for children.   The article leads off with a story about Taylor Santos, a 15-year old high school student who evidently was letting a friend copy her homework.  Her punishment?  She was spanked…hard to enough blister…by a 15-year old, MALE vice-principal

The Time article notes that 19 states allow teachers to spank kids.  Obviously, the Taylor Santos story is a bit weirder in that it was a male who spanked her, violating the school policy.  But really…do we REALLY want teachers spanking kids?  Or…why the HELL do we spank kids at all?

Just from an emotional side…I think spanking is NOT about the kid, it’s about the adult doing the spanking.  Spanking to me is something that adults do to make THEMSELVES feel better.  Spanking to me is something adults do to relieve their OWN frustration over misbehavior.

From the scientist side of myself…you also have to just look at the evidence.  Study after study show that spanking is NOT beneficial, it does NOT curb negative behavior, but instead, it spurs behavioral problems in kids and increases their aggression.

Despite the evidence, despite the extremely negative impression of spanking in many other countries…the Time article notes that 71% of adults in America approve of spanking as a disciplinary tool.  That’s down from 94% in the 1960s, but still very high, considering that the practice is simply banned in many countries.  What I found absolutely stunning about the article though is that nearly 1 in 4 adults think it’s OK for TEACHERS to spank their children.  Really?  You REALLY want to authorize other adults to discipline your children by administering physical pain???!?!?

It’s disgusting to me that parents or other adults feel that administering pain or any other physical stress is an acceptable form of punishment.  However, I can already anticipate some responses from the “old-school” folks out there.  Perhaps “Old-school” isn’t the right term.  Studies have shown that in terms of overall demographics, the differences are often pretty marginal in terms of who approves of spanking.  Men are slightly more likely to approve, as are blacks, poorer people, and blue-collar workers.  But the differences between demographic groups really are quite small.  However, I can easily imagine certain personalities that are more likely to approve.  I can easily imagine responses I’d get to this post, from certain types of people I know.

I do find it interesting that Americans collectively seem to have this sense of superiority over other cultures.  I find it interesting because there’s little doubt that other cultures look down their noses at American attitudes towards issues such as spanking…capital punishment…violence and gun control…etc.   Given the laws in other nations, and given that Americans are MUCH more likely to be spanked, executed, shot, or murdered, I’m sure that many cultures view Americans as modern barbarians.

I must say…there are many times I agree with those views.
