Gutless…

Senator "Tiny Penis" McConnell

Senator Mitch McConnell, leader of the tiny penis GOP Senate.

Gutless.  Just one of many adjectives that come to mind as I think of the GOP.  Today, the term most definitely applies to GOP Senators.  Other adjectives that come to mind?  Selfish.  Corrupt.  Greedy.  Myopic.  Or, let’s just call it like it is…they’re just plain evil.

Today, a GOP Senate filibuster managed to derail a rather straightforward and sensible bill that would expand background checks for gun owners.  Just a few months removed from Newtown…just a few months removed from over 20 CHILDREN being gunned down by a nut armed to the teeth…our beloved GOP Senators decided that their next election was more important than the safety of our nation’s children.  Our gutless, piece-of-shit GOP Senators decided that getting that next campaign check was more important than barring criminals or the mentally ill from obtaining weapons.

Mitch McConnell, KING of the gutless, tiny-penis, evil piece-of-shit GOP Senators, has REFUSED to even meet with the families from Newtown.  What’s wrong, Mitch?  Having a little trouble sleeping at night?  Having a hard time dealing with the fact that you are helping to ENABLE the slaughter of children?

No…wait.  That’s giving these pieces of shit WAY too much credit.  It’s PAINFULLY obvious that basic morality and a normal conscience aren’t what get you to Washington.  What gets you to Washington is the single-minded focus on that campaign check.  What gets you to Washington is placing your OWN status and power above the well-being of your constituents.  What gets you to Washington is NOT worrying about the consequences of your actions, as long as the ultimate goal…your next re-election…is obtained.

Gutless?  Yes.  But perhaps evil is indeed a better choice of adjective.

New Republican Strategy – Only pay SOME Of our bills

Can this be true?  Can Republicans seriously be considering this “strategy” for dealing with the “difficult problem” of the debt ceiling?

Washington Post – House Republicans New Strategy

The component of the story I’m referring to isn’t the part about passing a very short-term extension to the debt ceiling, delay the inevitable until March instead of February.  The part of the story I’m referring to is this:

But he (Paul Ryan) seemed open to an idea advanced by a number of conservatives in case there is no agreement to raise the limit — he said he believes the White House would have the authority to prioritize spending in case the borrowing limit is not raised.

The “thinking” (I’m being generous) behind the brilliant GOP idea is that they DO force us past the debt ceiling date without an agreement.  Their “thinking” is that the enough tax revenue could flow in to meet SOME of our spending obligations, and that Obama and the Treasury Department could decide what priorities to pay for, and which ones to not pay for.

Brilliant.  THAT will calm the markets.  THAT will calm Fitch and others who are threatening to downgrade the US credit rating.  Instead of defaulting on ALL our bills, Paul Ryan and other GOP Congressmen (yes, Congress “men”, because I doubt anyone other than lilly-white, GOP men are behind this) are advocating a strategy that allows Obama and the Treasury department to pay for SOME of our bills.

Paul Ryan, you are a dangerous, dangerous man.  I for one am damned glad Romney chose you as a running mate and your team spectacularly crashed and burned on election day.  It’s not easy for a presidential election loser to come back in subsequent elections, and I can’t imagine what a disaster it would be for the U.S. if a Paul Ryan presidency ever occurred.

But hey, maybe I’m wrong.  Maybe ALL THE ECONOMISTS IN THE WORLD are wrong.  I do take some issue with the writer of the Post article too, in their choice of terminology, calling the debt ceiling a “difficult issue”.  It’s an artificial issue, something that used to be a formality, now being used as an incredibly dangerous political ploy.

Ideology over country.  Gotta love the GOP.  Shrink the government, even if we have to sink the whole damned economy to do it.

Following Congress’ example: Sorry Ford, Not Paying my Car Loan

Ford Edge

Sorry Ford, I've decided to follow Congress' example. Just as they're refusing to authorize an increase in the debt ceiling, just as they're refusing to pay for things they've already authorized, I will no longer pay my car loan until I get major concessions!

I’ve decided that precedent has been set by the best and brightest that America has to offer…our GOP-led House of Representatives.  I’ve decided to follow the shining example set by the GOP.  Ford…I’m no longer going to pay the loan bills for the car I bought last February.

Yes, Ford, I did take ownership of a shiny new Ford Edge last February.  Yes, I signed all the paperwork, agreeing to make my monthly payments on the car.  But despite receiving the car, despite agreeing to pay for it, I’m going to follow the GOP example and not pay for it unless you, Ford, agree to make concessions to me.  I didn’t spring for the integrated DVD/entertainment system in the car when I bought it.  Just for the heck of it, I’d also like to upgrade my wheel/hubcaps to an even shinier more intricate style.  In exchange for these concessions, Ford, I will make my car payments for a period of one year.  Then we’ll have to renegotiate and you’ll have to offer more concessions before I agree to pay further bills.

OK…sounds ridiculous, right?  But this is the new “logic” from the GOP-led House.  Yes, I know “logic” and “GOP House” are two phrases that are rarely ever uttered in the same sentence, but the same principle applied.  Congress sets spending and approves it. As a result of what Congress has already approved and what the president has signed, we have bills to pay.  We have a deficit.  But the GOP has decided to hold hostage our ability to actually PAY for the spending they’ve already approved.  As with the last fiasco of a debt-ceiling “negotiation”, the GOP intends to not authorize an increase in our debt ceiling without significant concessions and spending cuts in return.  In other words…they don’t want to pay the bills for what they’ve already purchased.

Given my cynical nature, it’s probably not a surprise when I say the majority of the American electorate are dumb as my (very sweet but stupid) Cocker Spaniel Cooper.  In a poll, a strong majority of Americans were against raising the debt limit.  In other words, a strong majority of Americans are stupid and unreasonable, much like our GOP-led House of Representatives.  The debt ceiling is a formality, a mechanism to allow for our bills to be paid.  Congress sets all spending levels, so it’s incredibly ballsy of them to use the debt-ceiling as a political ploy to highlight deficit spending in Washington.

Obama has said he will not negotiate over the debt ceiling increase.  Good…I hope he sticks to that, because the debt ceiling shouldn’t be something that ever needs to be negotiated.  It shouldn’t even need authorization by Congress, it should simply be required that the U.S. Treasury have the capability to always pay the bills that Congress has already authorized.  The “trillion-dollar platinum coin” issue has been making the rounds as an option for Obama to bypass Congress if the GOP continues to play with economic disaster by making the debt-ceiling a political football.  Frankly, I hope Obama does it.  I hope he bypasses Congress and shows the world how incredibly ridiculous the House GOP is.

I’m also glad to see Obama’s Cabinet picks.  I’m glad to see Joe Biden say that Obama is willing to go it alone on gun control and sign executive orders to address gun violence.  Enough is enough.  Obama is a 2nd-term president, winning in an election where Democrats also made gains in the Senate despite having many more Democratic Senators up for reelection than Republicans, and winning in an election where Democrats HAD MORE THAN A MILLION more national votes for the House than did Republicans.  The American people have spoken, and they chose Democratic leadership.  Obama should be willing to stock his Cabinet with whomever he pleases without GOP whining or threats of filibuster, especially since confirmation of cabinet posts has been a formality in the past.  If a GOP is more concerned about campaign contributions and politics than about the safety of our children, a reasonably popular 2nd-term president should be able to do what he can to make sure gun violence is addressed.

Let the madness stop.  End the political gridlock.  It looks like Obama has gotten the message and is standing his ground (finally).  In the meantime, I’ll keep paying my car loan…

House Repubs Shoot Down Violence Against Women Act

The Violence Against Women Act has been in effect since 1994.  It provides government funding for programs to combat domestic violence, including support for domestic violence victims.  The Senate passed a reauthorization of the VAWA back in April.  The House?  They first tried watering the Senate bill down so much that Senate balked and Obama said he’d veto the House version.  Since the House version didn’t pan out the House has chosen to simply ignore it, and not address the issue again in 2012.  As a result, for the first time in 18 years, the VAWA hasn’t been reauthorized.  Government funding for domestic violence programs is now set to sharply decline.

Unbelievable.  The fiscal cliff debacle was just the tip of the iceberg for the House GOP.  Over 2 months after Hurricane Sandy, and the House GOP was still refusing to bring up disaster relief…until Chris Christie and others blasted the incompetence of the GOP today.  JUST prior to the fiscal cliff vote, the GOP brought up a bill to freeze Government salaries for another year (this would be 3 years now with a pay freeze)…an incredibly transparent play to cover their asses for their embarrassing handling of the fiscal cliff.  Agricultural interests and many responsible politicians (are there any left?) are up in arms over the handling (or lack thereof) of the farm bill by the House GOP.

So…any confidence that the House GOP will be sensible in 2 months, when it’s time to address the sequestration delay, the debt limit, and funding government for the rest of the year?  Unbelievable…

Republican Meltdown – Politics First, Country Last

If their actions weren’t so harmful, it would be very easy to take delight in the Republican Party’s meltdown right now.  Ideology now rules the GOP, to the extent that the Tea Party wing of the GOP would rather sink the nation than give in on tax issues.

This was it.  This was the best chance to seriously address budget deficits.  After the Simpson-Bowles recommendations, after serious efforts by Obama and Boehner to craft a “grand bargain” last year, and again earlier in the fiscal cliff debate, there was  real chance to tackle deficits through a balanced approach that cut spending and raised taxes.  Obama was even giving in on entitlements, offering concessions that many Democrats abhorred.

But alas, the GOP has become a one-trick pony, a one-issue party.  The only issue the GOP seems capable of addressing is shrinking government.  That’s not necessarily bad, if the GOP held a pragmatic, rational view of how to shrink government.  Hell, I’m as liberal as they come, but I agree we need to cut spending (how about starting with the Defense budget???)  The GOP’s stance isn’t necessarily bad, if the GOP also accepted modest revenue increases as a way to help balance budgets.  It’s not necessarily bad, if the GOP had a rational PLAN to shrink the government in an intelligent manner, using a scalpel to trim the fat, instead of using a meat cleaver to decapitate the patient.

Instead, we have a GOP that has decided ideology is more important than deficit reduction.  A small number of simple-minded, ideologically rigid, inflexible SOBs in the GOP House have made compromise impossible.  They have made effective governance impossible.  By sticking to ideology, they have scuttled a deal that could have gone a long way to solving our budget issues.  Instead, we’re stuck with a very small deal that does very little to solve our long-term budget problems.  And even this incredibly minor deal was unpalatable to the Tea Party wing of the GOP, with House Republicans voting against it by a 2-to-1 margin, despite the devastating consequences to our economy if nothing were passed.

The GOP is in free fall.  They’ve become so irrational, so full of hate for Obama and Democrats, that all hope is lost for pragmatic compromises or rational governance.  We’re at a stage where the most powerful of GOP kingpins has become so “small”, literally (in terms of power) and figuratively (in terms of respectability), that John Boehner is walking the halls of the Capitol yelling loudly at Democratic leadership to “Go fuck off”.

So here we sit, with a minor increase in taxes that does little to address our deficit issues.  Here we sit, with another manufactured crisis looming, as a 2-month delay in “sequestration”, the debt-limit increase, and funding for the government for the rest of the fiscal year all come into play at the same time.  Round 2 – a resounding, yet hollow “win” for Obama and the Democrats.  With the coming Round 3, we may just have  knockout blow where the victim/loser isn’t Obama/Democrats or the Republicans, but instead, it’s the American economy and political system.

GOP Answer to Deficit Reduction – Cutting Tax Rates for Rich

Up until today, it was easy for Obama and Democrats to ignore the bluster from John Boehner and Republicans.  Boehner and other top GOP whiners certainly haven’t pulled any punches in their whining about Obama’s initial proposal.  But until today, they didn’t even HAVE a proposal of their own, making it very difficult to take their complaining seriously.

Today, Republicans provided a supposed counter-offer to Obama.  And…it’s still very difficult to take them seriously.

Republicans counter-proposal on taxes?  Cutting tax rates for the wealthy…but closing unspecified loopholes to somehow increase $800 billion in revenue.   To begin with, there are no details on exactly what loopholes will be closed, or how the net outcome from cutting tax rates for the wealthy would somehow result in an increase of $800 billion to government coffers.  By CUTTING rates for the wealthy, but promising unspecified loophole closures, Republicans see the best of both worlds…not going against the Grover Norquist tax-cut pledge, AND inevitably shifting some of the revenue increase burden to groups other than the wealthy.

It’s amazing how far Republicans are going to protect tax cuts for the richest of Americans.  This same farce of a counter-proposal also seeks to cut $600 billion in health costs, with one stated Republican option being to raise Medicare eligibility from 65 to 67.  Another $200 billion would be saved by decreasing cost-of-living adjustments for Social Security, as well as all other aspects of government.   While doing everything they can to protect their wealthy donors, Republicans certainly have no problem sticking the poor or the sick with additional costs.

After the election, an emboldened Obama is finally showing a backbone.  He’s finally sticking to his guns on making the wealthy pay their fair share.  I just hope to god he sticks with it, and doesn’t cave once the fiscal cliff approaches.

Going over the cliff, even with a short-term recession looming as a result, is far more preferable than caving to Republicans who not only want to maintain the gap between rich and poor, but seemingly want to widen it.

Raped and pregnant? Too bad, says GOP

Hairy Old White Men

A photo of the GOP press conference, back when they were responding to Obama's decision on contraceptive rules. Note everyone in the picture is a bona fide "Hairy Old White Man", with nary a woman in sight. THESE are the folks who say that if YOUR DAUGHTER is raped...she must carry the baby to term.

JUST when you think the GOP couldn’t possibly lurch any further to the right, those ”Hairy Old White Men“ go and do something nutty.  Today, the GOP announced that a major plank of their election platform will be a call for a Constitutional amendment that bans ALL abortions, including NO exceptions for women who are victims of rape or incest

Imagine a teenage girl, as a victim of rape or incest.  Imagine one of your FAMILY members as a victim of rape or incest.  Would you be comfortable FORCING a woman to carry a child that came about due to a violent crime??!

It’s so nice to know that the Hairy Old White Men who dominate the GOP are SO in touch with women’s issues.  Just a few days after Todd Akin makes his ridiculous comments about rape, the GOP establishment comes out themselves and basically says WE DON’T CARE ABOUT WOMEN’S RIGHTS.

What’s even more pathetic is that should Romney win the White House, and should Repubs. gain control of the Senate and keep control of the House…NOTHING WILL CHANGE on the abortion front.  As I’ve said before…Repubs know their most reliable voting bloc are people who vote SOLELY because of the abortion issue.  Republicans have controlled the White House and both the Senate and House before, and what happened on the abortion issue?  Nothing.  And that’s by design.  They talk a good talk.  They’ve talked a good talk for many years.  But when push comes to shove, at a National level, nothing changes, and Republican politicians honestly have little motivation to change the status quo.

The Constitutional amendment ploy is purely political.  It has zero chance of ever becoming the law of the land, even if Repubs tried to push it.  But hey, it SOUNDS good to the ever wackier, ignorant, red-necked masses who make up the majority of the Republican constituency.

Perusin’ & Musin’

Some random thoughts from perusin’ the web:

Obama Caught with Open Mic - In a story the GOP is sure to play up from now through the election, Obama was caught saying something to Russian president Medvedev about the European missile defense system, asking the Russian to give him “space” on the issue until after the election.  It’s not exactly surprising to hear that when (seemingly) out of the range of an open mic, this is how a politician would talk.  There’s no doubt Republicans will act indignant on the story, and will righteously declare that all Obama cares about is getting re-elected, and is just playing politics until the election.  And…they’re probably right.  Obama can take heart though that 1) Republicans are JUST as apt to put politics over the welfare of the country, and 2) in the short news cycles we have, it’s only a matter of time before Romney makes a verbal gaffe and pushes this off the front pages.  The real losers in all of this are all the voters. I can already picture scads of Republican ads this fall that feature this Obama comment, just as I can already see scads of Democratic ads this fall that feature stupid Romney comments.

When do plants know to bloom in Spring? - This story is definitely relevant this spring!  Interesting read if you get a chance.  We’ve already got things blooming here, in South Dakota, in March, in response to the incredibly warm weather we’re having.  There have even been Hummingbirds spotted in adjacent states of Nebraska and Minnesota!  I don’t usually see them at my house until the first week of May! But as this story notes, for some plants, day length doesn’t matter, temperature alone can trigger blooming. As such…my hummingbird feeder is going up this week!!  Who knows??

Tim Tebow welcomed in New York - Few things bother me more in life than our incredibly shallow American culture, and what passes for being a “celebrity”.  We have “celebrities” who have done nothing more than be participants in a “reality” (hah!) TV show, or are simply famous for being complete jackasses.   In the sports world, the artificial nature of being a “celebrity” was quite obvious over the past week, when the Denver Broncos signed Peyton Manning to be their QB, and subsequently traded Tim Tebow to the New York Jets.  Manning is a Super Bowl winner and an NFL MVP.  Tim Tebow?  He was one of the poorest rated quarterbacks in the NFL last year.  But yet, the stories have at LEAST been 5 to 1 about Tebow instead of about Manning.  Tebow to me is one of those “artificial” celebrities, now that his college career is well in the past.  He CERTAINLY doesn’t deserve the attention for what he’s accomplished on the field in the NFL.  He gets attention simply because of his very public, very over-the-top profession of his religious faith.  In America…THAT’s what gets you noticed…acting outside-the-box.  Peyton Manning’s accomplishments?  Unimportant compared to Tebow’s unusual personal life.  I wish I could say it was just sports, but this story is a microcosm of America in general.  Working hard and achieving great things in your line of work?  That’ll get you nowhere!! What you NEED is a viral video! What you NEED is to be a wacky, vocal jackass!  THAT’S the kind of thing that gets you noticed in today’s America!

Supreme Court Tackles Obamacare - The Supreme Court today started hearing arguments regarding the legality of ObamaCare.   In a poll, 56% of Americans believe Supreme Court Justices will rule according to their own personal politics, while only 27% believe that ObamaCare will be judged according to the law.   I can’t say as I disagree.  What’s always baffled me…why SUPREME COURT JUSTICES are either categorized as “Liberal” or “Conservative”.  Isn’t the LAW above politics?  Why the HELL should LAW be judged according to one’s own personal politics?  Are American laws SO poorly written, are they SO open to personal interpretation, that Supreme Court decisions are (seemingly) always split according to perceived political persuasion of the Justices?   In the end, what I FULLY expect…a 5-4 decision to repeal the mandate component of Obamacare. Why?  Not because of any legal precedent or ruling.  No, I expect a 5-4 ruling to repeal much of Obamacare, simply because 5 current justices are considered “Conservative”.  Hey…I TELL you that I’m a CYNICAL scientist.  Unfortunately, when it comes to my cynicism in matters such as this, I also have a hell of a lot of evidence to back me up.

Limbaugh Sets New Standard – Scum of the Week

Who would have thought it were possible?  After all the ignorant, hateful things that Rush Limbaugh has said over the years, yesterday, he may have just set a new standard for being the world’s biggest pig of a human being.  After a GOP-led House Committee held an all-male panel review of the contraception “controversy”, Nancy Pelosi invited Georgetown student Sandra Fluke to testify in front of the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee.  Fluke was stricken from the GOP-led House Committee panel list (after all, she WAS a female…can’t have females discussing contraception, right?).   During the hearing with the Democratic Committee, Fluke talked about her out-of-pocket birth control costs (~$3,000) while at Georgetown, since Georgetown University won’t cover contraception costs.

Rush Limbaugh’s reaction to Fluke’s testimony?  Yesterday on his show, he said “What does that make her?” (for wanting contraception costs covered by insurance.)  “It makes her a slut, right?  It makes her a prostitute.”  Limbaugh’s line of “thinking” (I’m not sure you could call it that) is that covering contraception is “paying her for having sex”.

There’s not a lot I can add here.  Limbaugh’s words speak for themselves.  THIS is the view the increasingly conservative GOP seems to have of women.

In most ways, the thought of Santorum winning the GOP nomination scares the hell out of me, thinking that he could be one step away from the presidency.  On the other hand…one part of me WISHES Santorum gets the nomination, for the simple reason that Santorum as the GOP candidate would bring even more attention to how incredibly extreme, hateful, and bigoted the Republican party has become.  Issues like the contraception “controversy” would be a part of the campaign, and thus this INCREDIBLY ugly side of the GOP would get airtime for a number of months.  Short of such a public, long-term airing of the GOP’s dirty laundry, short of a longer-term public embarrassment of what the GOP evidently stands for nowadays, it’s hard to see the wacko element of the GOP going away any time soon.

GOP Misguided Attempt to Politicize Gas Prices

U.S. Domestic Oil Production

Not that Republicans would ever let little things like "facts" get in the way, but...since early 2009, U.S. oil production has been increasing, the first time annual increases have been noted in over 25 years. In reality, there's little the U.S. government can do to control gas prices, but the GOP might want to think twice about using the term "Drill Baby Drill", when looking at the basic facts about domestic oil production.

Gas prices are on the rise.  Of course that means the GOP sees blood in the water.  Every other line of attack against Obama has been falling apart for the GOP, so why not, right?  Republicans already have a rich history of trying to resonate with voter’s wallets and pocketbooks, by politicizing something that nearly all Americans deal with every day.

Given Republicans COMPLETE lack of concern for the environment (or our children’s futures…don’t get me started), the mantra of “Drill Baby Drill” comes out from the right EVERY time gas prices creep up a little bit.  EVERY time gas prices creep up, the GOP blames Democrats for overregulation of oil and gas drilling.  The GOP presidential candidates today are spouting the same nonsense that was spouted 4 years ago by McCain and Palin in during the 2008 campaign.   The facts of oil and gas exploration and drilling under Obama don’t support the same old GOP rhetoric, however.

U.S. domestic oil production declined steadily for over 25 years…until early 2009, when U.S. production began to increase.  Hmmm…what happened in early 2009?  Oh yes, that’s right, that’s when Obama took office.  NO, I’m definitely NOT saying there’s a direct correlation.  However, it IS quite laughable to hear Republicans talk about Obama as being some evil mastermind behind rising gas prices, when it is under his administration that domestic oil production has risen for the first time in a generation.

The rise has more to do with technological improvements in oil access, and discoveries of new fields such as in North Dakota, than it does with politics.  In fact, there’s VERY little a sitting U.S. President can do to control oil prices.  U.S. domestic production is a drop in the bucket on the global market.  We could open up the Arctic Slope National Wildlife Refuge for drilling, we could dramatically decrease regulation of drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, we could wring EVERY LAST DROP of oil from American lands…and the impact on global markets still wouldn’t significantly alter the prices you pay at the pump.

Global demand for oil is rising, particularly in the booming Asian economies of China and India.  The people and countries of the Middle East seem hell-bent on self-destruction.  These are issues a sitting U.S. President has little control over, and are the MAIN reasons why oil prices have risen so sharply.

“Drill Baby Drill” may sound like a “winner” to GOP candidates.  Given the utter ignorance of most Americans, “Drill Baby Drill” also WILL resonate on the campaign trail.   But we’re already increasing domestic oil production during the Obama Administration, and prices have continued to rise.

Just remember, GOP, your turn is coming.  The next time a Republican is in the White House, gas prices will continue to rise.  What will be your excuse then?  Also realize, ignorant American voter, the ONLY thing “Drill Baby Drill” is going to get you are locally devastated environments where your children and MANY subsequent generations won’t even be able to drink the water or breathe the air without serious health consequences.

Try looking at the actual facts behind U.S. domestic oil production, global oil prices, and the price you pay at the pump, before blaming one party or one president.
