Outdoor “Sportsmen”…you are on my $hit list

White bass

White Bass, scourge of South Dakota fishermen who only want to catch walleye! At least that's what the "sportsmen" on the Missouri River were acting like this morning.

I’ve had a number of posts in the past about experiences I’ve had when I’m out taking photos, or fishing, or hiking, when I’ve run across some idiot “sportsman” who is doing something like blasting away at every living thing they see, taking over their limit, etc.  I’ve generally been pretty careful when I post about something like that, saying things like “I realize most hunters, fishermen, etc. are conscientious and respect and try to protect the resource”.

Well, to that, I say bull$hit.  Every time I go out, I swear to god there’s some bozo who personifies what being an outdoor sportsman is NOT about.  Today I went fishing on the Missouri River below Oahe Dam.  It’s one of my favorite spots, with crystal clear, cold water coming through the dam from Lake Oahe.  The words “crystal clear” and “water” are NEVER used in the same sentence in South Dakota, as most rivers and ponds around here have a visibility of about 2 inches.  This is certainly a welcome difference, and it is a wonderful place to fish.

Wonderful place to fish means…lots of fishermen, at least by the standards of sparsely populated South Dakota.   And of course, lots of fishermen, means a LOT of “sportsmen” who seem hell-bent on trashing the place or breaking the rules just to ensure THEY get their limit of fish to bring home.  This morning, I got there and walked down to the water, dodging beer cans, old bait containers, and discarded fishing line as I went.  One thing I ALWAYS do when I go fishing…I end up bringing back more than I went with, and I’m not talking fish.  I made a point of picking up some of the garbage in my vicinity, and started fishing.

It was wonderful!  In about 3 hours of fishing, I caught about 20 fish, BIG fish for their kind, fish that put up a hell of a fight.  The problem?  This is South Dakota!  There IS no “fish” that matters to about 85% of fishermen, other than walleye.  Have you ever caught a walleye?  They fight like a limp noodle, even the big ones.  But they’re tasty!  And filling the freezer, harvesting as many as you can (legally, or illegally in many cases) seems to be “the” mode of fishing around here.  Back to the “problem”…I didn’t catch a single walleye this morning, which actually shocked me.  19 of the 20 fish I caught were White Bass…BIG white bass, very fat and happy, averaging about 14 inches, with a few that were absolute monsters for the species.

In that fast current below the dam, a big white bass puts up a hell of a fight.  You certainly KNOW when it’s a white bass that hits, rather than a walleye.  I had a blast.  I didn’t keep any fish today, but I do keep White Bass to eat sometimes.  To me, they’re every bit as good as walleye, once you strip this one dark strip of meat out and keep the white meat.  But the other fishermen in the  area seemed to have a pretty low opinion of what they were catching.  There were 2 young guys next to me, looked to be about 20 years old.  They too were catching white bass…and BITCHING about it, because they weren’t walleye.  So, the one guy catches a white bass, unhooks it…and immediately throws it 10 yards back into the weeds.  He and his buddy had a GREAT laugh, talking about getting rid of the “damn white bass” to “make room” for the walleye.

You can imagine my opinion of these two dolts, but I hoped it was an isolated thing, and just scowled, but didn’t say anything.  Then the other guy catches a white bass….and does the same thing, throwing it back into the weeds.  THEN I said something!  Think I kind of surprised them by speaking up, but I first asked what put up more of a fight, a white bass, a walleye, or a dish towel (answer: walleye comes in 3rd).  Then I said you don’t have to like them, but it is illegal to be throwing them up on the bank.

The answer was about what I expected from a pair of 20-year old South Dakota “sportsmen”…the one guy said “whatever”, and the other just rolled his eyes and turned away.  They only fished for a few more minutes before leaving, and didn’t catch any more fish, but they certainly put a damper on the fun I was having catching white bass.

SO….I think I’m done saying “most” sportsmen ARE true sportsmen, who care about the environment and the resource they’re using.  I’m not convinced any more that it IS a majority, so “most” is too strong.  SOME fishermen and hunters are wonderful sportsmen, who do their best to preserve the environment.  But I’m becoming increasingly convinced that “most” fishermen and hunters only care about filling the freezer, environment-be-damned.

Whoever you two were this morning…you have won this week’s “Scum of the Week” award.

New Political Battle Front: Children’s Entertainment

Callista Gingrich

Republicans "fighting fire with fire". Since Hollywood is CLEARLY attempting to indoctrinate our children in the evil Liberal agenda, champions of conservatism such as the Gingrich's are using the more DIRECT approach to indoctrinate children in conservative principles. Here, I believe Callista Gingrich is teaching the children that Obama is an evil Kenyan Socialist Muslim.

Lou Dobbs is such a tool.  What was it?  Was CNN not paying him enough?  He USED to be at least rational, bordering at respectable!   But what’s happened over the last several years?  I’m mean sure, taking a job at Fox “News” is bound to warp ANYONE’s soul, but who knew that it could happen so quickly?  Now every time Dobbs opens his mouth, you’re waiting for something stupid to come out.  In other words, he’s become like FAR too many Republican politicians or talking heads.

Dobbs’ latest crusade?  An issue that threatens to destroy the moral fabric of America itself…Dr. Seuss, and the upcoming “The Lorax” movie.  Dobbs claims that the Lorax is a result of “the president’s liberal friends in Hollywood”, and is attempting to “indoctrinate” children in a “liberal agenda”.   In The Lorax, a strange woodland creature fights against removal of all the trees.  According to Dobbs and Fox News, The Lorax is some offshoot of Occupy Wall Street.  According to them, Dr. Seuss and children’s entertainment in general are trying to push a “liberal” agenda.

Give…me…a…freakin’…break.   First of all, why is it a negative to say that we shouldn’t cut down every single tree (as is done in the Lorax)?  Is EVERY other movie that features ANY kind of wildlife or conservation theme really part of one big liberal agenda?

I can see the Republicans coming out with their “alternative” versions of movies.  In the Republican version of “The Lorax”, God will float down from the heavens and inform the people of the town that Earth is there for people to rape and pillage, leading the villagers to throw the Lorax in prison and convert the entire town to one big oil-fracking field.   In the Republican version of “A Dolphin’s Tale”, instead of saving the dolphin and giving it an artificial tail, Winter the dolphin will be slaughtered and sold to a Japanese sushi conglomerate.   In the Republican version of “Big Miracle”, the whales will be allowed to die while BP peppers the region with offshore oil platforms.

I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise, since the new crop of Republicans don’t even seem to CARE about our children’s future.  They don’t seem to CARE whether our children have clean water or air, or an adequate environment to support humanity.  And (GASP!!!) if you teach our children about basic conservation issues, they might grow up to (GASP!!) APPRECIATE the natural world and live in harmony with it, rather than treating it all as one big opportunity for short-term economic gain.

Thank GOODNESS we have champions of Republican conservatism to counter this evil liberal Hollywood plot to indoctrinate our children in basic environmental responsibility!!!   Not only do we have beacons of conservatism like Dobbs to protect us through open criticism of children’s literature, we now also have Republicans fighting fire with fire!  Callista Gingrich has a children’s book out called “Sweet Land of Liberty“, about a history loving elephant (no attempt to “indoctrinate” children with the use of the elephant as the main symbol of the story).

I’m SURE we’ll see Dobbs appearing on Fox News soon, railing against Callista Gingrich’s book, right?  I’m sure we’ll see Dobbs having an on-air rant against the Creationism museum and its attempts to teach children the “truth” about evolution, right?

Scum of the Week: Rep. Allen West

Scum of the Week

Congratulations, Rep. Allen West! Here's to you, and the rest of Americans with some sense of entitlement to drive monstrous over-sized vehicles, yet still complain about gas prices.

Never underestimate the stupidity of a politician.  Does Rep. Allen West REALLY think the way to get at Obama is to bring up the cost of filling the gas tank on his Hummer?   Poor West.  He says it cost him $70 to fill the tank, and he blames Obama for it.

I’m using West as the “Scum of the Week”, but it might as well be the other millions of Americans who complain about gas prices.  First of all…there’s VERY little that the U.S. government can do to control gasoline prices.   Prices are going up right now due to drastically increased demand in China and elsewhere, and tensions in the Middle East…not exactly issues that the U.S. government can immediately address.  The mantra of “drill baby drill” isn’t going to substantially reduce global oil costs, or gasoline prices.

But the real “scummy” part of this story are Americans and our sense of entitlement, with regard to cheap energy, and massive vehicles.   The most straightforward way to reduce energy costs and dependence on fossil fuels from overseas?  Efficiency and energy savings, NOT destroying the environment to wring every last drop of oil from every last square foot of American soil.  Mr. West’s Hummer gets about 15 mph. How dare he complain about the price of gasoline, when he (like MANY Americans) drives a monstrous vehicle that eats gas like a kid with candy on Halloween.

It’s a shocking difference, driving in the U.S. versus driving in Europe.   The size of cars is so much smaller in Europe.   But evidently for West and millions of other Americans, it’s a god-given, American right to drive a monstrous vehicle, AND sound like a jackass when you complain about gas prices.

Drain Tile, and eastern South Dakota's impending annexation

Roll of drain tile

A roll of drain tile, a key element in Iowa's evil plot to annex eastern South Dakota

If you live in eastern South Dakota like I do, be afraid.  Be VERY afraid.  I have good reason to believe that Iowa plans to annex eastern South Dakota, and who could blame them?  Look at all we have to offer!  We have the Corn Palace.  We have corn mazes.   We have, uh, well…we have a hell of a lot of corn, and you KNOW how much Iowans like corn.

And what is the reason for my paranoia?   Eastern South Dakota as a whole has been in the beginning stages of (yet more) agricultural expansion in the past few years, as higher prices for ag commodities, driven partially by the demand for biofuels, has resulted in signficant conversion of unbroken prairie to cultivated cropland.  Right now, you also can’t drive for very long in eastern South Dakota without seeing some farmer putting in drain tile.  Farmers are trying to utilize every square inch of land they own, and drain tile allows them to better drain croplands and eliminate areas that are too moist for cultivation.

And what does this have to do with Iowa?  Well, have you BEEN to Iowa?  At least right now in eastern South Dakota, despite all the cropland, we do have scattered wetlands and lakes.  From a birder’s perspective, it’s nice to at least have SOME oases of natural land cover, areas where I can look for wetland birds.  But Iowa?   The U.S. as a whole has lost over 85% of its wetlands, and I swear that 99.9871% of that has been in Iowa.  I believe it to be possible to start at one end of Iowa and walk all the way to the other end, and never once have to step foot outside of a corn or soybean field.

I therefore conclude that the massive amounts of drain tile being installed in eastern South Dakota is part of an evil plot by Iowa to annex our part of the state.   They’re trying to make us look like Iowa.

The worst part of our impending annexation?  I’m a Nebraska Cornhusker through and through.  It’s going to suck to have to start buying Iowa Hawkeye gear.
