Perusin’ & Musin’

Some random thoughts from perusing the web…

GOP Chooses Millionaires over Federal EmployeesDemocrats have been trying to extend the federal payroll tax, and in their plan, said they’d pay for it by a slight increase in taxes for people making over $1 million a year.  Sounds fair, right, in a time when the wealth gap in the U.S. continually grows?  Not for the GOP, who again have shown they will protect their rich sugar-daddies at all costs.  In response to the Democrats plan, Republicans countered by removing the tax increase for millionaires, and instead extending a pay freeze for Federal employees to help pay for it.  Federal employees already are in a 2-year pay freeze, and this would extend it another year.  Occupy Wall Street protesters, you have yet more ammo.  Again the GOP shows its true colors.

ESPN “Sports” News of the Day - One of my pet peeves is just how negative the media is in the U.S.  Stories with a negative tilt seem to be what the public craves though.  The negative tilt on news even extends to sports news.  This evening I visited the ESPN.com main page.  On the right, they have about 10 major headlines.  The top headlines in all of sports included 1) Jerry Sandusky sex scandal updates 2) Football player fined for endzone dance 3) Feds conducting search of another sex-scandal coach 4) Another story about a NFL player fine…well, you get the idea.  I would find it very depressing to be a sports reporter, only to get into the business and find myself always reporting on scandals.

Newt Gingrich – “I helped defeat Communism” - Wow.  Gingrich says he helped defeat Communism, and also helped develop supply-side economics.  The man certainly has an ego.  Given that “occupy” movements continue to grow though, I’m not sure I’d be trying to identify myself as a supposed creator of Reagan-esque, trickle-down economics.  If it were such a success, you’d think the economy would be booming right now, given that the rich continue to greatly expand their share of the Nation’s wealth.

Viruses Survive For Long Periods in Environment – I currently have the most god-awful cold that I’ve had in many years.  I really don’t want my wife and son to get what I have, so I’ve tried to be very careful.  I’ve stayed sequestered in a corner of the house, washed my hands constantly, and tried like heck to not spread my germs all over creation.  I always assumed that viruses and bacteria really can’t live for long outside the body.  However, the study in this story notes that flu viruses can actually live up to several months outside the body, if conditions are right.  After reading this story, I have decided to personally take over our basement, lock the door, and keep the family away until mid-2012.  Better safe than sorry.

Cain Blasts “Character Assassination” - Cain says “they” are conducting a character assassination on him. I assume “they” are not only the legions of women stepping forward to level accusations of disgusting sexual behavior against him, but also the media for carrying the stories.  If Cain wants to accuse anyone of character assassination, all he really needs to do is look in a mirror.  The man is a pig.   Thankfully, he’s also a horrible politician, and unlike slick politicians who seem to often have negative press just roll off their backs, Cain’s campaign has been pretty clueless in terms of trying to respond to all of the allegations.  Bye-bye Mr. Cain, your moment at the top is over.  Now I just hope Gingrich’s run at the top of the GOP race is just as temporary.

Birding the Grasslands

Golden Eagle

A Golden Eagle taking flight.

I had a wonderful day yesterday birding the Fort Pierre National Grasslands in the center of South Dakota.  Winter on the Grasslands can be downright spectacular for raptors, and yesterday was no exception.  I saw at least 50 Rough-legged Hawks, at least that many Northern Harriers, 12-15 Ferruginous Hawks, a couple dozen Red-tailed Hawks, a Merlin, 5 or 6 Golden Eagles, a pair of Bald Eagles, and the highlight for me, 9 Prairie Falcons.

A brilliant sunny day…wide open spaces on the Grasslands…and raptors filling the skies, fenceposts, and telephone poles.  I can think of few better ways to spend a day!!  I still haven’t processed a lot of photos, but am working on putting photos from the trip on my website.

Book Review – “Avian Architecture”

Avian Architecture by Peter GoodfellowI love to pick up bird and birding books for my collection.  When I started birding in 2000, I started with one field guide.  You soon realize that any one field guide has limitations, and so…you pick up another.  When shopping for field guides, other books on birds and birding often catch your eye, and you might pick one up.  It didn’t take long for a small collection of field guides to grow into a more extensive collection of books covering a variety of topics related to birds and birding.  My most recent addition is “Avian Architecture – How Birds Design, Engineer, and Build”, by Peter Goodfellow.

The book primarily covers nest-building, and has a very straightforward and effective structure.  After a very brief forward and introduction, the remainder of the book is simply divided into sections which discuss different nest structures, such as Scrape Nests, Aquatic Nests, Cup-shaped Nests, Mud Nests, etc.  Each chapter also has a simple structure, with an introductory section followed by a “Blueprint” section which provides illustrations on basic nest characteristics.  This is followed by “Materials and Features” section which selects one species, and provides a summary of nesting materials, structural elements, and other features typical for the chapter’s nest category.  This is followed by a short series of individual “Case Studies”, which provide 2-page synopses of nest construction and nest characteristics for several species.

It’s a very simple book structure from which the author doesn’t deviate, but it’s very effective.  By far the most interesting sections of the book for me are the individual case studies.  Have you ever wondered how an Australian Brush Turkey builds a nest and incubates its eggs?  Neither have I!  But the case studies are wonderfully interesting!  Who knew that birds such as this build what amounts to giant compost piles?  Multiple female birds will lay eggs in one giant pile of decomposing plant material, with the heat of the decomposition used to incubate the eggs.  Males will probe the nesting mound to check for temperature, and will rearrange material to ensure a relatively toasty incubation temperature.  Once the young finally hatch 7 weeks later, the young are left completely untended by the parents.

It is fascinating to read about individual species, how nests are constructed, the functional characteristics of those nests, and how the nests are used to incubate eggs and raise young.  The array of nesting techniques used by birds is simply amazing, from the simple scrape nest of a Killdeer, to the gigantic platform nest of a White Stork, to the intricately woven nest of a Baltimore Oriole.  The book comes in a hardback cover, has a simple structure, a very effective mix of illustrations and photographs, and an appropriate proportion of text vs. graphics.   If I were to provide any significant critique for the book, it is that I found myself wishing for more!   The book is about 150 pages, but I think it would have been just as effective at twice the length, with even more of the fascinating case studies!

“Avian Architecture” has a cover price of $27.95, and is published by Princeton University Press.  It’s a unique book that I think would be a welcome present for any bird nut on your Christmas list.

Thanksgiving Thanks

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert using humor to point out the ridiculousness of American conservatism...the perfect antidote for the lies and hate coming from the right.

On a Thanksgiving weekend, what better topic than to post what you’re thankful for.   To stay on topic with the blog focus, here are some things I’m thankful for, from the birding, environment, and political world.

- Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert – In a world where half the U.S. thinks Fox is a real source of news, in a world where right-wing, hate-mongering wackos like Rush Limbaugh and Anne Coulter spew lies and use hate to pit American against American, Jon Stewart and the Daily Show, and Stephen Colbert and the Colbert Report are the perfect antidote to the ever increasingly radical conservative agenda.  SOMEONE needs to point out how incredibly ridiculous the right sounds, SOMEONE needs to call out the right for their take-no-prisoners, our-way-or-the-highway, hate-mongering approach to politics and America’s social structure, and the Daily Show and the Colbert Report are perfect for putting the right’s own soundbites in perspective.

SkepticalScience.com – SkepticalScience.com is a site that focuses on debunking climate change skepticism, and the lies perpetuated by those attempting to undermine climate change science.   Scientists often aren’t very effective at communicating with the general public, and using the mainstream media as the primary pathway to communicate with the public simply isn’t effective, not when the media often seems more interested in generating controversy than focusing on the facts.  I’m specifically highlighting Skeptical Science, but I’m thankful for ANY website, ANY blogger, or ANY news organization that recognizes the science behind climate change and vehemently counter industry-sponsored groups that have attempted to politicize and undermine that science.

National Public Radio - It can be depressing to go online and read what passes as news on most websites.  Money makes the world go around, and since Americans seem more interested in the latest pop culture icon than they do in real issues, “news” seems to sometimes focus more on entertainment or cultural fluff pieces than on the real news of the day.   The other trend in U.S. news that REALLY bothers me is a pervasive slant to news stories that focuses on the negative or controversial side of a story.  There always needs to be someone to blame, there always needs to be a target that stokes anger, there always seems to be a need to pit American against American, right against left, etc.  With politics AND the media both taking that same approach, it’s no wonder we often seem to be a divided America.  Against that pervasive, negative, and biased news background, it is SO refreshing to get in the car in the morning and hear REAL news stories on NPR while driving to work.  You want “fair and balanced” reporting, you go to NPR.  While those on the right launch unfair attacks on NPR as being too liberal, it only takes a few minutes of listening to realize that NPR bends over backwards to try to provide “both” sides of the story, particularly on sensitive political issues.

Pathetic GOP Presidential Candidates - I’m not all that thrilled with many of the decisions Obama has made in his first term.  He’s proven to be a very poor negotiator with a GOP that refuses to compromise, and he’s been much less effective than hoped for with regarding to environmental issues.   However, given the incredibly difficult hand he’s been dealt, I think he’s been able to do some nice things.  There’s VERY little Obama can do to turn the economy around, given the situation in Europe and a GOP-controlled House that automatically is against ANYTHING Obama proposes.   The GOP is heavily counting on that poor economy to drive Obama out of office, and given that poor economy, normally, Obama wouldn’t have much of a chance to win a 2nd term.  This isn’t a normal situation though, in that the best and the brightest the GOP has to offer include a dimwit like Rick Perry, a sleazy Hermann Cain who also has absolutely no clue about politics, the economy, or world affairs, a set of wackos in Bachmann, Santorum, and Paul, an admittedly intelligent Newt Gingrich with a lot of skeletons in his closet, and the bland politician in Mitt Romney that nobody seems to want to support except by default.   It’s damned scary to think where America would be headed if Republicans controlled the House, Senate, and had the presidency.  I thank god that Republicans have fielded the most laughable slate of presidential candidates America has ever seen.

South Dakota Winter – A wonderful South Dakota winter is here!  Reason to celebrate?  Well, uh…no.  I HATE winter.  I HATE the cold. I HATE the snow. I HATE leaving work and pretty much only seeing the sun on weekends.   But one thing I treasure about South Dakota winters…birding and taking photos on the grasslands in the central part of the state.  Gyrfalcons!!  Prairie Falcons!! Snowy Owls!! SCADS of Rough-legged HawksFerruginous Hawks!! Golden Eagles!! Bald Eagles!!  A single day of birding and photography in the central part of the state typically provides dozens and dozens of raptors, and quite often, some good views at birds that are typically very rare in the conterminous U.S.  Given the otherwise bleakness of a South Dakota winter, the explosion of life on the grasslands in the winter, with raptors “dripping” off telephone poles and fence posts, is a very welcome sight.

Capital Gains Taxes and the GOP

Capital Gains Rates Change

Capital gains tax rates have fallen from a high of 38% to a 40-year low rate of 15% right now. 50% of ALL capital gains go to the 0.1% richest Americans...but yet the GOP wants to cut or eliminate capital gains taxes.

This recent article highlights the incredible effect capital gains have on wealth distribution in the U.S.    The highest 0.1% of income earners in the U.S. receive a staggering 50% of all capital gains in the U.S.   Of the Forbes 400 highest earners, 60% of income comes from capital gains.  The capital gains tax rate used to be nearly 40%, but over the last 30 years, that number has been whittled down to only 15%…to the GREAT delight of the uber-rich, as their share of the American pie continues to grow, at the expense of the rest of us.

Despite the incredible role capital gains (selling property or selling investment shares) have played in fueling the growing income disparity in the U.S., capital gains taxes have been a major talking point for the GOP, including GOP presidential candidates.  A majority of GOP candidates have proposed COMPLETELY eliminating the capital gains tax.   Eliminating the capital gains tax would cost Federal coffers about $100 BILLION a year, or $1 trillion over 10 years.  The “super committee” currently is trying to find a way to reduce the deficit by $1.2 trillion over 10 years…and has pretty much admitted it will fail to find a way to do so.  But yet despite our economic distress, despite the inability of Congress to find ways to reduce the deficit, many in the GOP are calling for a complete elimination of a tax on the uber-rich, which would effectively WIPE OUT any deal the super committee might come up with.

Somehow, our economy survived, and thrived, when capital gains taxes were over twice as high as they are today.  But for the GOP and their uber-rich puppet-masters, it evidently isn’t enough to greatly reduce the capital gains tax, they would like to completely eliminate the tax.   Leave it to Republicans to focus on cutting a tax that primarily benefits the richest 300,000 Americans.

Digital Damage Control by Discovery Channel

Discovery Channel

Digital Damage Control!! It seems Discovery Channel isn't pleased about negative blog press about their decision to only show 6 of 7 episodes of an upcoming series called Frozen Planet. "TreeHugger.com" is OWNED by Discovery!!!

Too funny.  Two blog posts down, I posted a story on the Discovery Channel, recommending folks boycott them for their ridiculous decision to show 6 parts of a 7-part series produced by the BBC, called Frozen Planet.  Discovery said the last episode might “upset viewers”…because it DARES to talk about the science of man’s effect on climate, and the effects of climate change on the environment.

In my other blog post, I got a comment from a “Chris Tackett” at “TreeHugger”, saying “they had contacted” people at Discovery to get the scoop on their airing of this series.  As the page states…TreeHugger.com is owned and operated by…THE DISCOVERY CHANNEL!!!

GMAB, Mr. Chris Tackett.  Give me a break, Discovery Channel.  Pretty tacky move, trying to do some digital damage control for your ridiculous decision regarding this series.  Thanks to your clumsy efforts to provide your own disinformation and PR, I’m going to be SURE to make this continuing story as prominent as I can on my blog.

Supercommittee Deadline…or Lack Thereof

Kick The Can

Deadlines? We don't care about stinkin' deadlines!! After all, John McCain said Congress makes the rules...they can break 'em too. And once again, Congress kicks the can down the road.

The “super committee” charged with finding $1.2 trillion in budget savings over the next decade still doesn’t seem close to a deal.  Congress’s automatic “trigger” is supposed to automatically cut a certain percentage across all government agencies in January 2013, if the committee doesn’t reach a deal.  The trigger was put in place to supposedly pressure Congress to actually reach a deal.  It’s been assumed that Republicans would balk at the automatic cuts to the Defense Department that would take place without a deal, and thus force them to negotiate.

Nope.  “The Congress is not bound by this,” said Sen. John McCain. “It’s something we passed. We can reverse it.”  Let’s see…earlier in the year, Congress brought us to the brink of default on our debt, all because of a lack of ability to agree on budget issues.  They installed this trigger to force them reach a deal…but the deadline is 5 days away, and no deal is in sight.  So, according to McCain, it’s no big deal!  THEY made the law, THEY made the trigger, so they can simply undo it!! After all, they’ve been SO successful in reaching budget agreements lately, they can just get rid of the deadline, get rid of the automatic trigger, and once again, kick the can down the road while we continue to head towards economic ruin.  They’re SURE to reach a deal NEXT year, right, Sen. McCain?

Pathetic.  Given the market’s reactions to debt issues in Greece, and now Italy, you’d think Congress would be paying attention to the grave implications of refusing to tackle the issue in the U.S.   But no, Republicans are too driven by dogma, and the next election, to worry about actually governing.  They continue to continue to fight EVERY effort to raise new revenue.  Their latest “concession” included a lowering of the highest tax bracket, and making the Bush tax cuts permanent.   They continue to act like puppets for corporate CEOs, doing everything they can to keep the status quo, to continue to perpetuate the gap between rich and poor, no matter the consequences for the country.

It would be a complete shock at this stage if the super committee came up with a deal next week.  The deadline means nothing to Congress, as McCain noted.  The new deadline when the clock strikes midnight at the end of 2012, when the Bush tax cuts expire if Congress doesn’t do anything.  If Congress doesn’t do anything, the automatic $1.2 trillion in cuts also kick in that January.

In other words…probably the BEST case scenario to reduce the deficit is for Congress to do nothing…which seems to be their specialty.  Maybe there’s hope after all.

Boycott the Discovery Channel!!!

David Attenborough

EEEEEEEEEEKKK!!! It's "controversial" BBC narrator David Attenborough!! Run for your lives!! Thank GOD Discovery Channel is shielding us from this man's evil!!

Alright, this REALLY pisses me off.  The BBC has produced a 7-part series called “Frozen Planet”, narrated by the popular David Attenborough.  All seven parts will be seen in Britain and elsewhere.  But in the U.S.?  The Discovery Channel, which is the outlet that will be airing the series, says they will not broadcast the 7th and last part of the series, as it might “upset viewers“.

The reason?  The 7th episode focuses on man’s impact on climate change, and the resultant negative environmental effects.  The Discovery Channel, a channel which purports to cover environmental and science issues, REFUSES to air a show that discusses the science of climate change…all because of the ridiculous, ignorant, ass-backwards populous of the U.S. that stupidly believes climate change is a political issue, not a science issue.  For a channel that supposedly has a focus on science, bowing to politics and IGNORING the science is just reprehensible.

SOMEHOW, Discovery has no problem with shows like “American Guns” or “Sons of Guns”, which glamorize the world of guns and deadly weapons.   SOMEHOW, Discovery has no problem with stupid shows focusing on used car salesmen, or miners who seem hell-bent on destroying the environment through gold mining.  But a show that talks about climate change?!??!  EEK!!!  They can’t show that!!  It might upset the ignorant redneck component of the American population that has no clue about the science of climate change.

I REALLY hate how channels like Discovery, Animal Planet, and National Geographic seem to continually get further and further away from airing science-oriented shows, in favor of complete schlock like “American Guns”, “Psychic Gold Hunt”, “Inside Indie Wrestling”, or “Rat Busters”.  Why not, I guess?  The American public is already shockingly ignorant of basic science issues.  Science education is completely inadequate, and we continue to undermine funding for science research.  What the hell, we might as well complete our slide into the scientific cellar by also removing all the actual science from our science television programming.

Execs running the Discovery Channel, you are a complete joke for refusing to air this episode.  David Attenborough and BBC science programming…REALLY controversial stuff there…I can see why you’re balking at showing it.  Pathetic.  Discovery Channel, I am now deleting you from the list of viewable channels at my house.  Won’t be much of a loss, given the complete crap you’ve been programming lately anyway.

Perusin’ & Musin’

Perusin' & Musin'Some random thoughts from perusing the web…

Ron Paul Shows What’s Important for GOP – Ron Paul today said that if the GOP “goes soft” in negotiations in the debt committee, the risk is that Obama would get re-elected.  Note that the “risk”, the main priority for the GOP, has NOTHING to do with the success of the debt committee.  Their main priority has NOTHING to do with negotiating in good faith, and doing what’s best for our country.  No, the priority is all about the next election, and making sure Obama isn’t reelected.  Even if it means taking the entire country down, by ruining the debt-committee negotiations.

Too Late to Stop catastrophic Climate Change?  – An International Energy Agency report released this week painted a pretty bleak picture with regard to the likelihood of avoiding catastrophic climate change.  For a long time, the hope has been that we could somehow limit warming to 2 degrees Celsius globally.  Even with that amount of warming, there are very significant implications on regional ecosystems.  The IEA report notes how incredibly unlikely it will be that warming is restricted to even that level.  Considering that a report a week or two noted that carbon dioxide emissions over the last year were higher than even the WORST projections from a few years ago, we’re likely accelerating climate change, not slowing its progression.

Jerry Sandusky Admits to “Horsing Around” with Kids - Jerry Sandusky, the ex-coach at Penn State who has been indicted for sexual assault on multiple young boys, admits he has often showered with young boys, but that it was all just “horsing around”.  Sandusky’s lawyer says Sandusky is just “a big kid”.  Do scumbags like Sandusky really think people are going to buy that defense?  That he’s just was “horsing around” with all these young boys over the years?   Does “horsing around” with kids include showering naked with them, bear-hugging them naked, and doing…more disgusting things that his victims accuse him of?   We have two registered sex offenders living a few blocks away.  Scares the hell out of me knowing people like this are out there, when I have an 8-year old son.

Cain on Defense after Libya Comments - Herman Cain has already shown a lack of foreign policy credentials, but he’s beyond the point where he can get by with the excuse of “that’s what the experts are for” (referring to policy advisors if he should by some miracle be elected).  Yesterday was a complete joke though, when he was completely lost on the topic of Libya…shocking, giving the prominence Libya has had in the news.   The bigger question to me is…HOW THE HELL can people like Herman Cain even be considered presidential material?   HOW THE HELL can a Rick Perry EVER be elected into any position of responsibility?!?  WHY THE HELL do American voters seem to sometimes treasure complete stupidity in their candidates?  On the bright side…I wondered if I’d “miss” Sarah Palin (remember her?) when she finally dropped out of the media spotlight, but with Cain, Perry, Bachmann, Paul, and practically every GOP member of Congress, there’s definitely no shortage of OTHER people to make fun of.

Two Rhino Species Extinct in One Week - Last week, the last known Javan Rhino of a certain subspecies was found shot, with its horn cut off.  This week, the western Black Rhino of Africa was declared extinct in the wild.  Two megafauna down in a one week’s time, all for the sake of horny Asian men who “need” rhino horn as an aphrodisiac.  Ain’t humanity grand…

More Alaskan Plans to Kill Wolves

Wolves and Moose

Wolves will do what wolves were born to do...kill to survive. Men will do what men are good at...being selfish and short-sighted.

Poor Alaskan moose hunters.  Moose hunters are up in arms that there simply aren’t enough moose for them to go out and kill.   In some parts of Alaska, aerial killing of wolves has been done in an effort to increase moose populations.  For the first time, they’re considering killing wolves on the Kenai Peninsula south of Anchorage

The genesis of the move was a recent radio program where hunters called in and said they were “disgusted” with the low number of moose on the Kenai.  Of course it’s the wolves that get the blame, not the hunters that are out popping off moose.  They said there are about 90-130 wolves in the entire Kenai, and about 5,000 moose, a number of moose that is “below target”.  MAYBE, just maybe, the reason that the number of moose is “below target” is that hunters have been allowed to kill more than the population can sustain.  But like other examples I’ve given in the past (cormorants and Great Lakes fish populations; Seals and fish populations in the Northeast), it’s NEVER people that are considered the issue.

We’ve got our own local example of this kind of complete stupidity.   Pheasant hunting is huge in South Dakota, drawing hunters from across the country.  As I recently found out while staying at a lodge in the central part of the state, hunters even fly up from Mexico to hunt pheasants here.   Just this Friday, I was driving in the central part of the state taking photos, and continually ran across commercial hunting operations that were ferrying around hunters in specially made buses, or vans with the roofs cut off so hunters can leap out and start blasting away when they see pheasants.  Many of these large operations raise and release pheasants, birds that are about as “wild” as my cocker spaniel Cooper.  I don’t even think you’d need a gun to hunt some of them…you might be able to just walk up to them and nicely ask them to jump in a  bag, they’re so dumb and tame.

The reason I go birding in these areas is that there are often incredible numbers of raptors in winter that are attracted by all the pheasants and sharp-tailed grouse.  Several years ago, a landowner who ran one of these operations was convicted of shooting raptors, including eagles, because they were eating “his” pheasants.   I also have photos of this loser’s land, where he’s shot coyotes (again, for eating “his” pheasants), and duct-taped them, spread-eagled, on the telephone poles around his property.  Just sick.

It’s REALLY hard for me to see the ‘hunter as conservationist’ image that many hunters try to portray, when what’s VERY obvious is that all the hunters care about is their own “pleasure” in having things to blast away at.
