Northern Bobwhite

Bobwhites are one of the few birds I knew prior to taking up birding and photography in December 2000.  I grew up in southern Nebraska and did a lot of fishing and exploring as a kid, and one of the sounds I definitely remember were the calls of Bobwhites.  South Dakota is the extreme northern range of the species.  I had previously heard them a couple of times down by Newton Hills State Park, but had never seen one.  In October 2008, I was out at Beaver Creek nature area near Brandon, South Dakota when I flushed this guy.  He flew a bit and landed, and then was an extremely cooperative subject while I clicked away.  A very nice surprise, and a beautiful bird.
