This photo of a Common Loon (called Great Northern Diver in Eurasia) was taken in June 2006 at Bald Lake, a remote little water body near Willow, Alaska. It was nearly midnight when this was taken, as this bird and its mate were patrolling the shoreline. I crawled through the shrubs around the lake and waited, and eventually they passed right in front of me at a very close range. To make the experience even better, the one shown here was calling as he swam by...you can see the slightly open mouth and the tongue in this shot. It was by far the closest, and most memorable, experience I've had with Loons. Photo taken with Canon 20D, 400 5.6L.
